March of the Women (from The Merry Widow)-This lively attractive march originates from one of the best-known operettas by Franz Lehár Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) a work that brought the composer enormous success. The operetta features many lovely arias and catchy dances but also subtle passages and wonderful singable tunes. One of those is Ja das Studium der Weiber ist schwer (‘The study of women is difficult’) a tune incorporated in the trio of this march. Lehár obviously had high expectations for it giving it a prominent place within the operetta. He also used it as an effective finale piece.

Michael White writing in the Independent On Sunday newspaper says '. . .perhaps the most impressive motivated handling of orchestral forces in an output which has always demonstrated an extraordinary control of large forms. And the most telling of its time-tricks is that it compacts such a fecundity of ideas into a duration that you are astonished to discover barely exceeds 15 minutes. It feels twice as long; and I don't say that as criticism. Merely as a tribute to the substance depth and technical accomplishment of an outstanding score'. The Independent on Sunday 25th July 1993

Everybody is familiar with the zoo. Remember all those animals? Big ones small ones. Water dwellers air-bound birds long legged hoppers creeping bugs. All animals seem to have their own peculiarities. Now Carl Wittrock (who also composed the world-famous master piece 'Lord Tullamore') invites you to join him in a musical exploration of the animal kingdom. An invitation you must not reject! In his 'A view at the Zoo' Wittrock presents ten distinctly different animals as compositions of music. You may be familiar with some of those animals such as the white swan or the butterfly but there are also more exotic breeds like the lion the monkey or theelephant. The composition as a whole is built around a structure of shorter fragments reminiscent of 'The Paintings Exhibition' by Moussorgsky. The parts are decorated with recognizable illustrations of the different animals. At each composition Wittrock looks for something that can fascinate both musicians and listeners. In this he succeeded extremely well.

from Paulus-This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringen’s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.
