Mass in Time of War- Haydn was in England in 1795 when he received word from his new Prince Nicolaus II Esterházy that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister. Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose every year a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined – when preparingthis edition – the music archives of the church and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt. Urtext from Joseph Haydn Werke Full score parts (BA4652) vocal score (BA4652-90) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP94) available for sale

Although the recorder is often the instrument with wich children will make their first musical discoveries it is also an instrument of the highest artistic merit. This series of books tries to link these two extremes providing a carefully planned pathway between first playful contact with the instrument and professional recorder playing. The three Tutor Books are suitable for use both with small groups and for individual tuition. Progress is methodical and is made in small steps placing great value on consistent work with breathing sound production and the development of rhythmic security. In the Tutor books we speak directly to the child and provide carefully planned precisely formulated exercises. We recognise that some children learning the recorder will not yet be able to read but hope that this will provide an opportunity for a parent or teacher to become involved in the learning process. Each step in this process should be fun and accessable to both the parent/teacher and the child.Tutor Book 1 is intended for children from about six years of age. Previous musical experience is not essential but undoubtedly would prove useful. It concentrates on the notes B A g E1 C2 and D2 leaving sufficient time

To General George Washington-The grand and energetic opening contrasting styles careful attention to articulations and rich harmonies make this one sound more advanced than it actually is. Consider using Heroic Tribute as the opening piece for your young band festival performance. The easy but bright and colorful Percussion along with excellent use of the Woodwind and Brass sections make this an ideal contest piece. There are plenty of teaching opportunities packed into this majestic new mini-overture for young bands. In fact even if your band usually plays higher grade level music you should still give this one serious consideration. Occasionally it’s good idea to rehearse a high-quality easiercomposition where your entire ensemble can concentrate fully on ensemble playing phrasing tone quality etc. and not worry about just chasing notes. This piece provides great cross-curricular teaching opportunities with history. A great teaching piece as well as a gem in performance!

This work was composed as a commission by the Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band for the 50th anniversary of their annual concert; the title A Golden Jubilation is a reference to this. The close friendship between Hiroki Ito theconductor of the band and Satoshi Yagisawa resulted in this brilliant and exhilarating fanfare of approximately two minutes in length; the piece is ideal to use as a concert opener. The original composition was arranged for an extremely wide rangeof instruments and a band of 200 musicians including a separate ‘banda’ harp and a variety of special instruments. This new version has been rescored for standard band instrumentation by the composer himself.

Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi ’s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period. Vivaldi wrote the “ Gloria ” as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Pietà around 1716. In the twelve movements of the “Gloria” Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements to tender transparently scored solopassages. The same mastery has also been applied to the “ Kyrie” RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. The Piano reductions are straightforward clearly presented and preserve the character of the works. - Attractive choral pieces which can be combined to form a short mass. - Vocal score as well as choral score available for the “Gloria”. - Informative foreword (Ger/Eng).

Fragment of the string quartet Silent Walls- 'Novelty of form selected modulations strange tone colours the use of completely unexpected rhythms' this is how Camille Saint-Saëns praised the debut work of a young colleague and continued: 'Above everything is a charm that surrounds the whole work and makes the mass of average listeners accept the most surprising audacities as something entirely natural.' The First Violin Sonata by Gabriel Fauré (1845 1924) was indeed an extraordinary composition which at the same time opened the way for the oeuvre of one of the most important French composers in the late 19th century and early 20th century: It was particularly with songs and pianomusic that he could win the heart of the audience. In the 1870s Fauré wrote three songs which were originally not meant to be a unity but were later assembled under opus number 7. The first song is ' Après Un Rêve ' a romantic rapturous song which like a 'Song Without Words' by Mendelssohn is perfect for making music with an accompanied solo instrument.
