By using the sonnet of renowned 19th century English painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti Williams celebrates the beauty of the English language and advances toward the true 20th century Englishart song. All of the songs in House of Life are written for sonnets from Rossetti's sonnet-sequence of the same name and thus the continuity of the cycle is enforced both by the music and the lyrics. At the same time thesimilarity given by the strict rules of the Petrarchan sonnet-form emphasises the differences in mood meaning and music between the six songs. Even though the (male) narrator in Silent Noon is optimistic andhopeful some of the variations in the passages suggest the despairing of love in Song 6 (Love's Last Gift') which gives this piece an interesting lyrical atmosphere.

Unlike MacMillan’s first three symphonies Symphony no 4 (2014–15) is essentially abstract. Here he is interested in the interplay of different types of material following upon a fascination with music as ritual that has stretched from Monteverdi in the early 17th century through to Boulez and Birtwistle in the present day. There are four distinct archetypes in this work which can be viewed as rituals of movement exhortation petition and joy. It is also a homage to Robert Carver (c1487–after 1566) the most important Scottish composer of the High Renaissance. There are allusions to Carver’s 10-voice Mass Dum sacrum mysterium embedded in the symphony and at anumber of points it emerges from across the centuries in a more discernible form: the vocal lines are muted and muffled literally in the distance as they are played delicately by the back desks of the violas cellos and double basses.

The music of Igor Stravinsky's Funeral Song op.5 composed by the young composer as an orchestral memorial to his teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov disappeared after just one performance in 1909. Following its rediscovery in 2015 and world premiere in St Petersburg last December orchestras around the world have swiftly added Funeral Song into their current seasons. The Funeral Song score has been reconstructed from the complete set of parts by Dr. Natalia Braginskaya and the St Petersburg Conservatory in collaboration with Stravinsky's publisher Boosey & Hawkes. This new addition to the iconic HawkesPocket Score range provides a unique insight into the music of the young Stravinsky before he found international success with his ballet The Firebird.
