Heartfelt lyrics rich harmonies and a smoldering slow swing tempo make this a fine choice for a vocal jazz ballad. Wonderful for building phrasing and blend!

This seven-minute concert overture recalls the early days of the railways and one of the most famous engines of all time ‘The Rocket’. It was commissioned by the Director of the North Hertfordshire Wind Band Phillip Ellis who is the great-great-great-grandson of Stephenson and depicts the Victorian carnival atmosphere on the day of the engine’s inauguration. An ideal work for a good school youth or county level band.

In 1942 Glenn Miller voluntarily joined the army and founded the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band and with his music he kept up the morale of the troops. In December 1944 he boarded an aircraft in England that would never reach its destination (France) - the plane was never found. The patriotic legend of this great composer however lives on in his music. Pennsylvania 6-5000 was one of the greatest successes of his famous band and is as popular today as it was in the 1940s.

Fast rhythmic with accents textural twists and a slow rubato middle section this short secular a cappella work is full of surprises and comic elements. With an Italian text by Charles Anthony Silvestri it is a perfect encore!

Carl Wittrock became inspired by huge icefields surrounding the South Pole. Colourfull and majestic sounds provide the composition a fascinating view of this 6th continent. Antarctica is a free impression of the scenery in theAntarctic. Melodies are linked together to convey the various aspects of the landscape. These melodies together with their simple harmonic accompaniments make this work pleasant for both the listener and the musician.

Madrigals by the Renaissance composer Monteverdi provided the inspiration for my own Madrigali . Symbolic images of flames burning and fire recur often in Italian love poems from this era and my cycle on texts employingthis fire motive blends stylistic musical features of the period (word painting modality bold harmonic shifts intricate counterpoint augenmusik etc.) within a contemporary compositional idiom. The music emanates from asingle primal sonority (the Fire-Chord) which opens the piece and is found extensively throughout all six movements in myriad forms and manipulations providing motivic unity to complement the poetic. This cycle ofmadrigals has been designated an American Choral Masterpiece by the National Endowment for the Arts. --Morten Lauridsen
