Luigi Boccherini(1743-1805) Was The Product Of An Artistic Family (his father was a cellist his brother a dancer andpoet his sistera ballet dancer) and followed in his fathers footsteps as a cellistin his native town of Lucca Italy. His Gloria may have been composedbetween 1764 and 1766 possibly written under the influence of thecomposers roman teacher Costanzi when in service at the palatinechapel of Lucca. However this work may possibly be along with theKyrie part of the opus 59 mass composed in 1800 (now lost). Thecomposition is divided into six movements:1. Gloria In Excelsis - Chorus2. Piano duet score. 1st performance Ellesmere College January 1986 by Richard Markham and David Nettle. Duration c.24 minutes. The work is in three movements and the musical thought is symphonic. The first movement (based entirely on the opening motive) goes through a series of paragraphs which eventually culminate in an extended melodic line played entirely by the treble player. The middle movement is a playful Scherzo with a rather sardonic waltz for its Trio. The slow movement (which comes last) is much more relaxed and concentrates on a D major motive with sharpened fourths but the more intense moods of the first movement return in a suddenly impassioned middle section.

First published in 1899 this hymn has inspired the gospel crowd ever since. Quartet For Piano And Strings was written by Gordon Jacob in 1969. It was first performed in 1970 by the Bernard Richards Quartet with Bernard Roberts playing the Piano. Gordon Jacob (1895-1984) was a British composer and arranger and one of the last proponents of the great Edwardian musical tradition. He studied at the Royal College of Music under Stanford Parry Vaughan Williams and Howells and later taught there for over forty years. He was a prolific composer creating over seven hundred works but he was particularly celebrated for his books on music pedagogy. He is probably best remembered for Music for aFestival written for the Festival of Britain and his arrangement of the National Anthem for the Coronation in 1953.
