Saxofoon Methodes en Etudes- Blues Horn Ensemble Playing is the result of the combined efforts of Andrew D. Gordon and Frank Villafranca to present the material in a way in which beginning and intermediate horn players can gain an understanding of blues ensemble playing quickly and easily. The twenty examples recorded on the CD provide a dual purpose. They take you through a variety of musical styles including swing blues slow blues funky blues jazz blues latin blues minor blues mostly based on the standard 12 bar blues chord progression and include four choruses each. The first two choruses are recorded with the horns and rhythm section consisting of keyboards guitar bass and drumsand the last two choruses are rhythm section only. On the last two choruses you may want to play the riffs again or practice playing your own melodic blues solos. These examples will help you build a repertoire of riffs you can use in a live situation. Hopefully they will also provide inspiration to help you come up with your own ideas.

This piece was written for a group of my students at the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven. The set of parts two melodic with two 'echoing' them and three 'keyboards' is not strictly co-ordinated and not specific as to instrumentation.

The Three Sets of Eight Interludes were published between 1946 and 1952 and display Thiman’s early 20th century tunefulness and grace. Eric Thiman was a 20th century composer teacher and Organist who was also an advocate of amateur music-making. He was a prolific composer of church music and Piano and Organ works and his craftsmanship and gift for melody were much admired. He was director of music at the City Temple in London. As an educator he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and he wrote many books on harmony counterpoint and musical form.
