Philip Glass' Violin Concerto arranged for Soprano Saxophone by Amy Dickson. With a commission from the American Composers Orchestra - Philip's first from an American orchestra - he composed the Violin Concerto . Though the actual writing took some four months (November 1986 - February 1987) Glass says ideas were germinating for a time before writing commenced. The Concerto is dedicated to Dennis Russell Davies and Paul Zukofzky who present the first performance.

Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin) composed in 1877-1878 was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself but “lyric scenes”. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise.After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

The Concerto in G major (TWV 51: G 9) is not only Telemann’s only concerto for the viola but one of the earliest viola concertos in history. It belongs to the standard repertoire of every violist and is also suited for less experienced players being relatively easy to master. Aram Iljitsj Khatchaturian an Armenian by nationality was born 1903 in Tiflis into the family of a book-binder. He began his musical education in Moscow in 1922 at the Gnessin Music School where his composition master was Mikhail Gnessin and completed it at the Moscow Conservatoire where he was a pupil of Nikolai Miaskovsky the famous Sovjet composer and pedagogue. Khatchaturian is the author of two symphonies three concertos (for piano for violin and for cello) the music for three ballets (Happiness Gayane Spartacus) and many chamber instrumental and vocal compositions. His latest work � the ballet Spartacus � has won in 1959 the Lenin Prize atthat time the highest honour.N. Volkov�s libretto for the ballet �Spartacus� is based on actual historical events � the great uprising of the slaves in Rome in 74 � 71 B.C. under the leadership of Spartacus. In spite of its historical subject �Spartacus� is essentially modern. Khatchaturian wrote : �I think that the heroic personality of Spartacus is in many aspects close to the struggle the oppressed colonial peoples of today are waging for their rights�.�Spartacus� is made out of three suites. Each of the suites is an independent work complete by itself and possessing its own logic of development.

Brazilian composer Octavio Pinto was in fact not a musician by trade but actually an architect with a thriving business throughout Brazil. He did manage however to get some Piano lessons from the well-known pianist Isidore Philipp as a young man and he issued a relatively steady stream of music – character and show pieces for solo Piano – until he died in 1950. Pinto 's most often-played piece of music is one written for and made famous by his wife the famous Brazilian pianist Guiomar Novaes: Childhood Memories (Scenas infantis from 1932). One of those five pieces for Piano Run Run! is now available in this G. Schirmer edition.This brilliant rapid piece is fun to play and listen to for young and old. The music paints a scene of running children as the title would suggest which is interrupted midway through with a calmer section as ‘The Organ-Grinder passes by’. Run Run! is a short yet effective piece.
