Heilig-Messe- Bernard of Offida 1604–1694 was a Capuchin monk whose saintly life and devotion to the sick and poor caused him to be beatified by Pope Pius VI on 19 May 1795. St. Bernard’s name day falls on the 11th of September (a Saturday in 1797) and it is generally thought that Haydn combined doing honour to the Capuchin monk with the production of a new Mass for his patron the day thereafter. Apparently later performances in Eisenstadt added horns to double the trumpets in the tuttis and – just as in the previous Mass – the clarinet parts were enlarged; it is almost certain that the new clarinet parts are either by Haydn or (shall we say) “supervised” by him. As inthe Mass in Time of War conductors have the choice of two orchestrations: with or without doubling horns and with or without the supplementary clarinet parts. The Heiligmesse has always been one of Haydn’s most admired works. Its dignity its strength (we draw special attention to the extraordinary “Gratias” with its brilliant contrapuntal writing) the subdued orchestral grandeur to which the B-flat trumpets contribute a silvery but unmartial weight – all these have made it one of Haydn’s most serious and most deeply sensitive church works: its constant popularity in Viennese churches is quite deserved. Urtext from Joseph Haydn Werke Full score (together with Missa Cellensis [Mariazellermesse] Hob.XXII:8; Missa brevis Sti Joannis de Deo [Little Organ Mass] Hob.XXII:7; Missa in Tempore Belli [Mass in Time of War] Hob.XXII:9) available for sale Parts (BA4651) and vocal score (BA4651-90) available for sale

Stabat Mater Hob.XX bis Oratorio (funeral music) versions from 1767 and 1803 The new scholarly critical edition of Joseph Haydn's Stabat Mater (1767) is published in Henle's complete edition of Haydn's works. This edition is the first to come as close as possible to the lost original and has been compiled using all currently available sources. The score has been fully amended in its original orchestration for two oboes or English horn strings and organ. At a later performance of this work probably in 1803 Haydn attempted to accommodate the intervening changes in musical taste. According to the composer's request and under his supervision SigismundNeukomm enlarged the wind orchestration by adding a flute two clarinets two bassoons two French horns trumpets and timpani. Urtext from the Haydn Complete Edition Haydn’s Stabat Mater in both its original scoring as well as Neukomm's scoring. Cecilia McDowall's A Draught Of Fishes for Piano Quintet. This piece has been specially written for St Paul’s Boys School. St Paul’s was founded by John Colet in 1509 with 153 children a number traditionally associated with the gospel miracle of the draught of fishes in which Jesus suggests to his disciples they would have more success if they cast their nets on the other side of the boat. A Draught Of Fishes opens with sombre strings and liquid piano accompaniment. The mood of the piece then alters to one of optimism and the players ‘catch’ their fish Schubert’s Trout! To this day there are 153 foundation scholars at St Paul’s at any one time and theyare entitled to wear a silver fish in their button holes. - Cecilia McDowall Commission made possible by St Paul's School.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703-1741) is regarded as one of the most important Belgian composers of the late Baroque era. The Allegro in G major was originally a movement from the Harpsichord Suites (Pièces de clavecin Op. 1 1730). The arrangement for violin and piano by A.Bent and N.ONeill in 1910 made the piece very popular particularly among violinists. The piece makes demands on the players left hand with its fast passages and virtuoso ornamentations and requires knowledge of all fingering patterns in first position. Occasionally it is advisable to use third position to avoid major string changes. The passage workconsists mostly of scale excerpts triads arpeggiation in thirds and sequences. The greatest challenge to master is the large number of string changes in a fast détaché which requires a flexible bow hand.

The Unrevealed Story of Skelte van Aysma- Galea et Bellum was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. Research revealed that it had been the property of Skelte van Aysma a Frisian officer who fought in the armies of the Princes of Orange Maurice and Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years’ War. This little piece of history was the starting point for this composition. As a leitmotif the hymn ‘Ach wie flüchtig ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ (‘Ah how fleeting ah how insignificant’) has been used. This 17th century melody by Michel Franck inan arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach initially appears only in fragments but grows to full stature toward the end of the work. An ideal contest piece with lots of challenges for your band.

Unusually for him Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto initiated by the strings and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to thatof a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina poetry and athleticism for the bassoon set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute clarinet in A bass clarinet contrabassoon horns).

In 1732 Giovanni Battista Pergolesi composed a setting of the Vespers in honor of St. Emidius Naples’s patron saint and protector against earthquakes. All that has survived are the introit Domine ad adjuvandum and three psalm settings: Dixit Dominus Laudate and Confitebor. Malcolm Bruno’s reconstruction consists of Pergolesi’s Hymnus Magnificat several short instrumental interpolations and the contrafactum of a secular cantata for the Salve Regina thereby presenting a full cross-section of Pergolesi’s artistic evolution. The reconstructed Vespers ranges from the early Confitebor with its allusions to Vivaldi to the late Salve Regina with its reminiscences of thefamous Stabat Mater; from contrapuntal choral writing to operatic arias; and from the magnificently scored Dixit to the almost intimate Laudate. The present edition follows the original sources as closely as possible and contains an appendix with detailed notes on performance practice. Performance material available for hire Effective reconstruction of a full-length work Cross-section of Pergolesi’s sacred music Clear and easy-to-play piano reduction
