The Suite Aquarium is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes each of them represented by a motif and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements. The Electric Eelin fact is not represented by a motif but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone) but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending. According to a famous statement by Herder folk songs represent the archives of a nation’s knowledge the expression of its heart and theimage that reflects its history and identity. Suite Marchigiana is a three movement piece inspired by folk songs from the Marche in central Italy a region with a very ancient and rich folkloristic heritage. The first movement elaborates on the well-known Pasquella . The Pasquella comes from a traditional winter begging ritual where a group of musicians go from house to house singing verses wishing their audience good health wealth and abundance in return for small amounts of money food and wine. The second movementis an Andante Triste inspired by an old song called Sona la mezzanotte (The Clock Strikes Midnight) a melancholic song that reminds us of unhappy love stories bereavement and so on. Luciano Feliciani concludes the suite with the Saltarello Marchigiano which is bright and sparkling and therefore in complete contrast with the previous movement. Although unproven the Saltarello is thought to have its origins in the 'saltatio' (a latin dance). While the choreae were group dances circular in structure and with a rhythmic progression the saltationes were more lively in character. The fast frenetic and joyous saltarello was without any doubt the most famous musical expression of rural central Italy in the nineteenth century.

The work consists of a slow introduction which describes the majestic sailing ships; and a faster section ( Vivo ) which begins in the style of a sea shanty. Now the ship is under full sail and we hear a reprise of material from the introduction to bring the piece to a close.

An unerring business instinct led Fritz Simrock at the beginning of 1878 to ask the Czech composer for some works for piano duet into which Dvo ák incorporated musical themes from where he grew up. Following in the footsteps of Brahms’s Hungarian Dances Dvo ák refrained from a literal portrayal of individual kinds of dance. As a result he created unique masterpieces of European music for domestic use and concert performance.
