Active as a composer pianist conductor educator writer andarts administrator he was the undisputable leader of Mexico's musical life for over 50 years. Chavez raised Mexico's musical standards and exerted a tremendous influence on every facet of the country's artistic life. Hedied in 1978 at the age of 79. The Piano Sonata No.2 was the first piece written by Chavez to be printed and distributed under the auspices of a major European publisher. The first edition of thiswork was out of print for many years. Fortunatley thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Ana Chavez the composer's daughter the work is once more being made available to the public. Pianists and music lovers will find enormous pleasurediscovering this work by one of the truly important figures of 20th century music.
