The idyllic village Beetsterzwaag in the east of Friesland and its surroundings are depicted in this suite. The first part describes the main street with its liveliness. The second part brings us to the nearby church of St. Hippolytus-Olterterp while the final section describes the children playing in the woods of Sparjebird. After organizing the material for the piece I wrote a melody that works against underneath and above Tallis's lines to create counterpoint made of old and new elements. Patterns of aggressive woodwind scales and ornaments evoke some of the hysteria inherent in glossolalia (ecstatic speaking in tongues). The central section of the piece gestures towards an insect-like musical and religious fervor. So To Speak is scored for orchestra and lasts seven minutes. It is dedicated to Amiel Melnick. From Psalm 27 comes a message of faith and hope. The musical writing is a bit challenging but well worth the effort. The flute adds a tremendous dimension not typical of obbligatos.
