Rustic by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is one of the most well-known and enjoyable pieces for Trumpet and Piano published in 1955. Technically and musically challenging you must be able to master vibrato and control your instrument. The Piano score was initially written for a brass quintet. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas chamber works and ballets among others.

French composer Charles Chaynes (b. 1925) studied at the Paris Conservatoire and won the Prix de Rome in 1951. In addition to several operas and chamber works Chaynes also composed several successful concertos such as his Trumpet Concerto. Suitable to the repertoire of advanced trumpeters Chaynes ' Trumpet Concerto is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. The Concerto contains many challenging yet appealing features such as use of varying time signatures articulation extended techniques complex rhythms tempo changes and a wide range among other aspects. Charles Chaynes ' Trumpet Concerto is a valuable addition to the modern repertoire of the Trumpet.

This work was commissioned by Fanfare Sint-Willibrordus Wintelre from the Netherlands and describes the power and wonders of nature in 4 atmospheric movements: Birth Battle Silence and Water . Wonders of Nature was composed as a soundtrack for a nature film and even without the images the work will appeal to the performers as well as the audience. It appeals to the listener’s own fantasy and imagination as one can attempt to visualise the imagery whilst listening to the music.

This was how Dvorak communicated to his publisher Simrock the joy he felt while working on Op.75a (Miniatures for Two Violins and Viola) and he immediately set about reworking it for Violin and Piano giving it a new title Romantic Pieces. The four short movements fully evoke the atmosphere of home music-making for which it was written. The Czech edition goes by the title Drobnosti (Miniatures) and is accompanied by a short Gavotte dated 1890 and also written in a simpler style for three Violins. This title is part of the first Complete CriticalEdition of Works by Antonin Dvorak .

Choral Dances- The set of six Choral Dances from Gloriana was first performed by the BBC Midland Chorus in March 1954 and later arranged for Tenor solo SATB Chorus and Harp for a performance to mark the opening of the Queen Elizabeth Hall London in 1967. The dances were intended as a homage to Elizabethan music and dance with each dance representing a different character from the opera. The opera Gloriana (op. 53) was written by Benjamin Britten in 1953 to mark the coronation of Elizabeth II and first performed at Covent Garden in June of that year with the Queen herself present. An unsympathetic critical reception meant that the full workwas rarely performed again until after the composer's death although extracts like the Choral Dances quickly became popular.

Duke Ellington (1889- 1974) was a very successful American pianist conductor composer and arranger. His orchestra existed for decades and was able to survive thanks to the enormous hits that he and his collaborators wrote. Many of those songs now belong to the standard repertoire of jazz musicians.Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) was arranger and composer with the orchestra from 1939 and also wrote Take the A-Train which became the band’s favourite song from 1941. Many recordings were made of it. Juan Tizol (1900-1984 valve trombone) played with Duke Ellington almost his entire career and composed Latin songs for the orchestra. He is co-composer of Caravan and Perdido.Just likein the original Duke Ellington concerts the medley begins with Take the A-Train followed by a number of classics from the repertoire of the legendary orchestra. In some songs there are soloists notable a solo on kettledrums in C- Jam Blues. This solo can also be improvised.When rehearsing a lot of attention has to be paid to the drum and bass which together form the rhythm section and drive the orchestra on. The other sections have to be tight and create a coherent swing effect. The swing shouldn’t be too stiff and can vary per song. For example in In a Sentimental Mood the melody can be played almost straight (classically) while the rhythm section continues swinging.

A feature for flugel and tenor horns based on the Passion Chorale-This timeless melody by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) is now chiefly remembered because of its inclusion in J S Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (hence its title) where it is treated to a variety of rich harmonisations. It is mostly sung to Paulus Gerhardt’s words O Sacred head! sore wounded .This setting features the flugel and horns who first play a lyrical descant to the famous hymn tune and then the melody itself against a Bach-like obbligato in the accompaniment.
