During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation sound and balance.

Cantata for the First Sunday of Advent- Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland BWV 61 Cantata for the First Sunday of Advent Bach began two of his cantatas with Martin Luther`s Advent hymn ' Nun Komm Der Heiden Heiland ' a German version of the early church hymn 'Veni redemptor gentium'. One of the most gripping solo parts (following the pattern recitative – aria – recitative – aria) is the bass recitative on the words of the Revelation with its highly expressive declamation of the vocal line and the naive graphicness of the pounding string accompaniment. Equally captivating is the following soprano aria which 'opens its heart' upon the Saviour's 'knocking' in amelody full of the cheerful tidings of Advent. The cantata ends brilliantly with a lovely figurative chorale movement enhanced by the interplay of a lively bustling Violin part which ultimately soars upward to breathtaking heights.
