The Gavotte is an old dance that is used by most of the baroque composers such as Bach and Handel. This gavotte composed by Handel has been expertly arranged for young band by Andrew Watkin.

Called “Kurfürstensonaten” (Prince-Elector sonatas) these three sonatas were published in fall 1783. In the dedication – which was most certainly not formulated by Beethoven – one reads: “Most lofty sir ... I have now reached my eleventh year” (whereby the composer has been made two years younger) “and since then my Muse has whispered to me often during the hours of devotion: Be bold and lay down the harmonies of your soul!” ... May I now exalted Prince dare to lay the first of my juvenile outpourings at the steps of your throne?” In fact the three sonatas have a special place among Beethoven’s earliest compositions already exude his spirit and can be used to acquaintthe budding pianist with this composer.

Oversized Score for Concert Band-Citadel was composed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of The University of Kansas (1865 to 2015.) It begins with optional offstage chimes (one or two sets [opt.]) to depict the daily ringing of the bells in KU's World War II Memorial Campanile. Trumpets introduce a fanfare-like figure that quickly evolves into the opening theme of the work. As the music settles and becomes softer a saxophone choir introduces a slower more pensive middle theme intended to describe the university's academic nature. A quiet moment at the end of this section hints at the famous Rock Chalk Chant in solo horn before the chimes and fanfare return to end the work in a final dramatic outburstof sound and color.

For instance the Kunz arrangement of Schumann’s Traumerei transforms a delicate right-hand line into a series of four-note chords which Kunz himself was able to play with grace and finesse. Karel Husa (b. 1921) is an American composer who was born and raised in Czechoslovakia. Twelve Moravian Songs is a charming collection of moderately difficult songs for solo Voice and Piano originally intended for school use. They were finished c. 1955 just after the composer had settled in New York. The text and melodies were taken virtually unaltered from traditional folk songs from the Czech region of Moravia. The straightforward Piano accompaniment was added by the composer and reflects the simplicity and beauty of the traditional tunes. The original text has been translated into English by Ruth Martin.

This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live have lived and will live in the US town of Algona who commissioned the work to celebrate it’s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums heavy brass) this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.
