Trio (Op. 10) was composed c.1940 and first published in 1943. It is scored for Clarinet Cello and Piano. One of Frankel’s earliest works it is light and pleasing showing how the composer was first influenced by jazz and classical chamber music before he later turned to larger symphonic works and started experimenting with serialism. Benjamin Frankel (1906-1973) was a British composer and musician. He is best remembered for writing over one hundred film and television scores including The Man In The White Suit and The Battle Of The Bulge but he also wrote eight symphonies and many smaller works such as his Violin Sonata and Concerto which were written for Max Rostal.

Easy Piano Pieces with Practising Tips-With the new Urtext Primo series the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116) Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8) works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty isrelatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces.Volume 4 combines works of the German Romanticism by Schumann Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Apart from well known pieces from Schumann's 'Album for the Youth' and the easiest waltzes from opus 39 (in the easier version) by Brahms the selection contains the attractive set of variations from Schumann's first Youth Sonata Op. 118/1 and Brahms’ Saraband in A minor WoO 5/1 as well as a number of pleasant pieces by Theodor Kirchner which continue the tonal air of Schumann and Brahms in easy playable pieces. This tender setting is a partner antiphon to Bednall's Ave Regina caelorum. In turn this pair compliments Howells's setting of the other Marian antiphons (Salve Regina and Regina Caeli). Triplet movement and changing metre create ebb and flow and harmonic and melodic interest bring a sense of peaceful expectancy.

Mozart's works for piano duet form the first highlight of this genre which later is only achieved by Franz Schubert. The two early sonatas from the Salzburg period which are particularly suited for music teaching in secondary schools are opposed to three effective compositions from his Viennese period. The present volume also contains the sonata KV 19d the authenticity of which is not confirmed as well as two fragmentary movements dated from Mozart's last years of life KV 357. Robert D. Levin has completed them true to style for practical use taking the limitations of the keyboards of the Mozart pianos and the composer's personal style into account unlike as in the firstedition of ca. 1860. In the appendix there are the two fantasias KV 594 and 608 originally composed for mechanical organ adapted from the earliest arrangements for piano duet published a few years after Mozart's death. In this edition the music text is published in the form of a score for the first time. Broad harmonies and a lilting piano accompaniment bring to mind pictures of a majestic ship sailing the open sea. The Church Is an Ark also features wonderful imagery in the text. The church is an ark that carriesthe Word and all who believe the Gospel heard this ark was built by nail-scarred hands built from the wood of a cross. What a powerful thought! When the commissioning church sang this anthem at their outdoor dedicationservice a rainbow appeared in the sky. Powerful indeed!
