In the 18th century during an expedition across the American state of Florida the English botanist Plukenett discovered a magnolia that left a lasting impression on him. He named the plant after the French botanist Pierre Magnol. In the meantime the popular magnolia has become one of the best-known flowering trees in the world. Nowadays it’s available in various types and colours.Just as the magnificent blooms of the magnolia appear in springtime so this simple choral melody opens slowly and gracefully eventually blossoming to a glorious climax. The delightful opening theme is taken up again and eventually everything comes to rest like a bud that closes at the day’send.

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a successful composing career. Histoires increased his popularity when it was published in the mid-1920s and Guy Deplus (b. 1924) a prominent French clarinetist arranged the compilation for Clarinet and Piano in 2004 to great acclaim. Histoires for Clarinet and Piano is made up of six movements; 1) The Leader of the Gold Turtles 2) The Little White Donkey 3) In the Sad House 4) The Crystal Cage 5) The Market of Fresh Water and 6) The Procession of Balkis. Containing a variety of musical aspects andtechniques Deplus' arrangement for Clarinet and Piano of Ibert 's Histoires is an exciting addition to the Clarinet's repertoire.

Neither the author of the text nor the history of the work’s composition is known to us; and to judge by appearances the version that has come down to us is but a fragment compounded of a number of once disparate elements and gives little indication of the work’s original form. Yet the movements that have come down to us are of such uncommon musical interest that we would not want to be deprived of them just because they may be incomplete. Norfolk is one of the most beautiful counties in England famous for its charming villages and boundless broads a popular centre for sailing holidays. It is also the home of one of the best known of all British composers Sir Malcolm Arnold. The date of the premiere of this piece was to fall close to his 80th birthday so Philip Sparke decided to write something of a birthday tribute. Some of Arnold’s best-loved orchestral works are his sets of dances: there are two sets of English Dances Four Scottish Dances Four Cornish Dances etc. most of which have been arranged for concert band at one time or another. Philip Sparke thought it would be appropriate for the concert band tohave its own set of dances and wrote Four Norfolk Dances very much in the style of Arnold’s suites.

The original score of Janacek 's The Lord's Prayer a work written for Tenor and Mixed Choir with Piano or Harmonium accompaniment was completed in 1901. Six years later the composer reworked it with Harp and Organ accompaniment. This version contained in Barenreiter's catalogue was first performed as a cantata on 18 November 1906 by the Hlahol Choral Association in Prague. The composer was prompted to write a musical setting to the text by a series of paintings by contemporary Polish artist Josef Mecina-Krzesz who inspired Janacek to create his own interpretation of the prayer with strong social undercurrents. The melody throughout betrays theinfluence of the Moravian folk song with marked accents on the penultimate syllables - as in Lach dialects. The piece incorporates rich polymelodic treatment. In terms of expression the dramatic sequence anticipates the opera Jenufa. The basis for the edition by Bohumir Stedron was the third authorised copy of The Lord's Prayer kept in the Prague Hlahol archive. In contrast with this copy the dynamics phrasing and rhythm were unified and supplied where necessary. The score contains a preface critical commentary and sung text in Czech and German.
