Tam O’Shanter was first performed at a Henry Wood Promenade Concert on 17 August 1955 with Malcolm Arnold conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was received with tremendous enthusiasm and was without doubt the most popular novelty during the 1955 season of Promenade Concerts. The composer is at pains to point out that whereas the earlier overture Beckus the Dandipratt is not descriptive but merely a musical impression Tam O’Shanter is very definitely programme music.

The Billy Strayhorn Collection brings together 17 memorable pieces written arranged or made famous by the man of whom Duke Ellington said ‘(He) was my right arm my left arm all the eyes in the back of my head’. A shyman who realised early on that his dream of a career in classical music was unlikely to become a reality because of his race Strayhorn found a father figure and a lifelong employer in jazz man Ellington. The music presentedhere reflects the full range of Strayhorn’s talent and contains his two most famous compositions Take The ‘A’ Train and Lush Life . Either one would have granted Strayhorn immortality in jazz’s hall of fame buthe wrote and collaborated on so much more doing it all in the role of a highly-valued but low-profile member of Ellington’s entourage. Ellington a cultured man had succeeded despite racism - and the tacit deal he struckwith show business was to be the smiling guy in the spotlight. Strayhorn remained in the shadows and lived a life of quiet courage working in the civil rights movement living openly as a homosexual and using his abundant musicaltalent mainly for the good of the Ellington orchestra. Play his incomparable music and decide for yourself who got the better deal. The true answer is probably that we all did.

Ave Verum Corpus by Paul Mealor for SATB divisi chorus unaccompanied.

Commissioned by the sound festival for The Scottish Flute Trio. First performance: November 13 2008. Duff House Banff Scotland. In this work all three players in turn play each of the three instruments - piccolo flute and alto flute - thus giving a contrasted sound to match the character of the four linked movements: hence the title. Sleepy using all three alto flutes begins on the lowest note - G. The mood gradually changes as they introduce higher pitches and faster rhythms as they 'wake up'. In Lyrical a flute introduces the melody which is then shared by a second flute and later by the alto flute. With Mischievous the piccolos arrive on the scene. The first oneincites another piccolo and then the flute to join in. The tempo quickens and after a brief climax the mood quietens leading to Peaceful. In this last movement all three instruments are played. In turn they present a lyrical melody but in different keys so as to suit their individual tessituras.
