This anthem The Peace That Surpasseth Understanding by John Tavener was commissioned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and the Ministry of Defence. It was first performed at a Service in Honourof the Passing of the World War One Generation in Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 11th November 2009 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh by the Choir of Westminster Abbeyconducted by James O'Donnell. COMPOSER'S NOTE In this setting of Saint Paul's great statement I have tried in a simple and primordial manner to suggest majesty solemnity and a radiance of peace andbliss. I have also given the music a ceremonial nature by inserting Allelouias' sounding from Heaven' (semi-chorus) gradually rising in pitch until they are answered by Allelouias' fromThe World' (main choir). The music forms a gradual crescendo reflecting the meaning of the words. At the musical and spiritual climax the full organ sounds four chords which represent The Four Angels beforethe Throne of God. The final chord then transforms into the sacred monosyllable OM which hums around the building representing the Peace and Beatitude of God's Presence. Duration: c. 4 minutes

Humphrey Clucas is known for a wide range of choral and vocal music alongside a growing body of instrumental music and this beautiful and evocative song is set to words by A.E. Housman. Originally for voice and lute Evenfall also works well with piano accompaniment and the edition includes versions for high voice (A minor) and low voice (E minor). The accompaniment is simple and supportive allowing the flowing melody to soar above with a tonal and accessible style which should appeal to singers of all ages and abilities. Humphrey Clucas was born in 1941 and read English at King's College Cambridge where he was also a Choral Scholar. Having taught Englishfor twenty-seven years he subsequently became a Lay Vicar at Westminster Abbey but is now retired. As a composer he is self taught and although he is well-known for a set of Anglican Responses written as an undergraduate almost all his serious music has been written over the last twenty-five years. He has a growing reputation as a choral composer and has produced an impressive and steady stream of choral works both sacred and secular alongside much instrumental music. He has written works for Cathedrals in Chichester Guildford Salisbury and Winchester as well as for King's College Cambridge Southwell Minster and Westminster Abbey.

The Five Lesser Joys of Mary begins with a conventional Nativity scene - the ox and the ass for warmth the star the Wise Men - to verses attributed by Warlock to one Daniel Lawrence Kelleher editor of Christmas Carols (No. 18 in the second series of Augustan Books of English Poetry) where the anonymous verses were published. The fourth stanza recounts Jesus 'Confounding the doctors the poor little Child ' while the fifth carries us to Calvary and a singularly lame conclusion as Mary 'Saw Jesus droop over and lie very still She thought of the good times they had long ago When He'd droop in her arms and she'd singhusheenlo.' Strophically composed with small variations Warlock's tenderness seems generic.

POD-In The Bleak Midwinter is a work by Paul Mealor for Unaccompanied SATB Choir taken from 'To Seek Where Shadows Are'. Commissioned by John Armitage Memorial and Pro Coro Canada the work sets words from the poem by Christina Rossetti and a full performance lasts around 4 minutes. In The Bleak Midwinter is a work by Paul Mealor for Unaccompanied SATB Choir taken from 'To Seek Where Shadows Are'. Commissioned by John Armitage Memorial and Pro Coro Canada the work sets words from the poem by Christina Rossetti and a full performance lasts around 4 minutes. Paul Mealor's lovely setting of In the Bleak Midwinter demands excellent tuning. To create such rich harmony each section of the choir divides - the bass line into three in addition to a baritone solo. The range of each voice part is substantial from a top B for sopranos to a low E (and optional B) below the stave for basses.Despite the demands of range and intonation choirs who master this piece will be rewarded. This is a beautiful addition to the Christmas repertoire. - Sunday by Sunday
