There have always been heroes big and small. This composition is dedicated to all those heroes who are committed to whatever it may be through a strong conviction; those who have ideals and who stand up for them; those who live their dreams; and finally those ‘everyday heroes’ who undertake their little deeds behind the scenes and receive no thanks for it. These heroes are everywhere but they often shun the limelight.

from Concerto for Double Bass arranged for Tuba or Euphonium and Concert Band-Antonio Capuzzi (August 1 1755 - March 28 1818) was an Italian violinist and composer who studied violin with Nazari and composition with Bertoni. In 1805 he moved to Bergamo where he was professor of violin at the Instituto Musicale and leader of the orchestra at Teatro Riccardi. He was highly regarded there both as a teacher and a performer. Although popular in his day most of his music is now forgotten; his most commonly performed piece today is the Concerto for Double Bass . All of Capuzzi’s known compositions were written during his Venetian years. It was in Venice that Capuzzi became close friends with Domenico Dragonetti Beethoven‘s virtuoso bassist. It isspeculated that Capuzzi wrote his Concerto for Double Bass for Dragonetti. Gerald Oswald has made a fine arrangement of the second ( Andante ) and third ( Rondo ) movements of the concerto to feature either euphonium or tuba with concert band. The solo part is also available in an edition with piano accompaniment.

for Trombone and Piano-When Tantalus a figure from Greek mythology invited the gods to a banquet he served them his son Pelops whom he had cut into pieces. He did so to test whether his guests were omniscient. As a punishment Zeus sent Tantalus to Tartarus the deepest part of the underworld to suffer everlasting torture. The term ‘torment of Tantalus' refers to this predicament representing things much desired but that are out of reach. Kevin Houben used the story of Tantalus as inspiration for this composition.

Moussorgsky was on a recital tour of southern Russia when he was inspired to write the Song of the Flea. It became popular immediately with audiences and remains so today. The correct title is The Song of Mephistopheles inAuerbach’s Cellar from Goethe’s Faust. The staccato Piano and laughing refrain wonderfully evoke the jumping flea and the absurdity of the lyric.Modest Moussorgsky was a Russian composer of the 19th century who alone and as amember of The Five worked to produce truly Russian art music rather than imitating European traditions. Moussorgsky is internationally known for works like the opera Boris Godunov Orchestral work Night on Bald Mountain and thePiano suite Pictures at an Exhibition.
