Written for Soprano and Tenor soloists and SATB chours. These two short Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) settings commissioned by Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare for their September 2007 concert series in Texas were designed to frame an evening’s programme rather like a compositional ‘inhalation’ and ‘exhalation’ a crescendo and decrescendo or a prelude and postlude. Densely textured the music aims to hint at the myriad readings Dickinson’s surface-simple poetry yields in its many readers. Each setting uses a solo soprano and tenor their voices referencing the polarities inherent in each poem (‘sun’ and ‘shade’; ‘love and hate’).

Dance from the East is a fiery oriental dance. It starts with an imposing introduction with the feel of a solemn lament and seamlessly merges into a dance. The piece then builds gradually through an incessant accelerando and crescendo until it reaches a fervent passion captivating every listener.

This serenata was indeed commissioned from Vivaldi by the French ambassador in Venice Jacques-Vincent Languet Count of Gergy on the occasion of the wedding of Louis XV to the Polish princess Maria Leszczyska and was performed during a festa that took place in the ambassador’s garden on the evening of 12 September 1725. This critical edition is based on the autographscore held by Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria of Turin. It also includes an Introduction that describes the genesis and the first performance of the Serenata the state of the sources and its musical content. The critical edition includes anapparatus that records all the variants between the autograph score and the secondary collate sources and a diplomatic- interpretative edition of the poetic text inferred – since no libretto has come down to us – by the words underlaid to the notesin the manuscript of the serenata. This Fantasia is founded on the following traditional English carols: The Truth Sent From Above (Herefordshire) words and tune; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen (Somerset) words and tune; On Christmas Night (Sussex) words and tune; There Is A Fountain (Herefordshire) tune only; together with fragments of other well-known carol tunes. The work is scored for ordinary full Orchestra with Organ and set of bells (ad lib.) or String Orchestra with Organ or Piano. Alternatively it may be accompanied by Organ or Piano alone played from the Vocal score with an optional solo Cello part (H212). A chorus part for performance bysolo Baritone and TTBB is also available (W41). The chorus is required to sing in four different ways: 1. Singing the words. 2. Singing with closed lips. 3.
