I wrote Cygncopations in 2003 for Victoria Walpole who gave its first performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Robin Stapleton on 11th July of that year. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 as part of a Friday Night is Music Night programme from London's Mermaid Theatre. The work was subsequently recorded by BBC Radio 3 conducted by Barry Wordsworth . In 2005 Victoria Walpole recorded Cygncopations with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Stephen Bell. This was released on a CD of the composer's instrumental works by Dutton-Epoch under the title A Little Fall-ish! (CDLX7175) . The title Cyncopations indulges my pleasure in wordplay whereby the misspelling of cyncopations puts one in mind of the French 'le cygne' (the swan) which Sibelius famously represents with the Cor Anglais. The piece is scored for Strings with two Horns harp and a very important part for the Vibraphone. In the first of its two sections (Rêverie) I had a strong image of a calm lake with maybe a swan floating gently on the water with occasional random movements from the currents below. In the second section (Danse) the bird heads for dry land and begins an eccentric waterside jig for its friends.The orchestration is for Strings with two Horns Harp and Percussion . The solo part may also be played by an Alto or Tenor Saxophone. There are certainly many answers to this question - but many responses are likely to contain these songs: Kool and the Gang’s disco classic Celebration Come On Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. En effet même si ce texte latin ne constitue ni un thème ni un programme musical il m'a semblé qu'il pouvait offrir - outre l'aspect religieux - une autre lecture. Une question fondamentale traverse la partition: 'Pourquoi avoir été créé pour disparaître un jour?'. C'est une question bien sûr qui n'a que le silence pour réponse et la foi comme chemin. Les sous-titres marquent des étapes sur ce chemin; ils symbolisent différentes attitudes de l'Homme face à la mort.'

Introductie en variaties over het Dies Irae-De Ruigewaard is a large polder (reclaimed land protected by dykes) in the Dutch province of Groningen. Shortly after the land was reclaimed around 1500 a settlement was established at the location of the current village of Grijpskerk. This was the source of inspiration for this concert work together with a 13th-century Gregorian theme - the Dies Irae - which is used as a leitmotiv.After the introduction follow five variations in randon order - however each one of them carries us back to a striking moment in the history of Grijpskerk home of the Excelsior Christian Music Association (CMV) who commissioned this work on the occasion of its participation in theWMC in Kerkrade (the Netherlands) in 2013.
