Après une ouverture sombre et mystérieuse il introduit plusieurs mélodies mélancoliques aux couleurs orientales dont l’air Zemer Atik . La mélodie d’un autre chant traditionnel juif est ensuite exposée. En juxtaposant à cette ligne mélodique un contrepoint aux accents des musiques d’Europe de l’Est Piet Swertsréussit à créer un espace sonore orchestral intriguant et créatif. Shirim poursuit son développement sur une succession de mélodies très enlevées et particulièrement colorées : Uri Tzion Sher et Ki Mitziyon mènent l’œuvre vers un finale pétillant et éclatant. Shirim (mot hébreu signifiant « chansons ») est une rhapsodie klezmer qui illustre à la perfection la diversité et la richesse de la musique traditionnelle juive.
