Spinning Jenny is a portrait of Leigh Lancashire circa 1948 and one of a series of occasional pieces inspired by Davies' youth in Salford. Spinning Jenny Street was a noisy hazardous street clangerous with industry andactivity when davies was at Grammar school in 1945. A modest work but one which reflects many aspects of the place period and people it was inspired by. Commissioned by the BBC it was first performed on 21st July 199 as partof the BBC promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Davies himself. This version of the famous piece Le Petit Nègre by Claude Debussy is a version transcribed for Bb Clarinet and Piano by Auguste Périer a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. First published in 1909 the piece in C major starts Allegro giusto and is an energetic cakewalk with an introduction followed by the main theme which is repeated before the piece comes to a close. This really charming work would suit an upper-intermediate level or above and is perfect to start working on Debussy 's music.

Concerto no. 24 (Viotti)- Parisian violinist Georges Catherine (1872-1958) compiles an exciting collection for the Violin repertoire. The first solo from Viotti 's Concerto No. 24 is clearly printed with a helpful key of unusual techniques. Viotti (1755-1824) was an Italian Violin virtuoso. He composed a significant 29 concertos for the Violin which remain popular in the advanced violinist's repertoire. The Violin solo line of Concerto No. 24 makes use of extended techniques including harmonics bow techniques articulations and hand positions. Catherine 's series Premiers Solos Extraits De ConcertosClassiques provides essential access to significant repertoire of the Violin preparing advanced violinists for the major concertos.

Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was an English composer and teacher perhaps best known for his choral music in the Anglican tradition. His String Quartet No.3 (In Gloucestershire) has a somewhat chequered history: originally finished in 1916 the only copy of the score was left on a train and lost forever! In the 1920s Howells rewrote the work incorporating the themes he could remember from the original but large sections of it had to be created from scratch. Howells was unable to serve in the Great War due to ill health and this quartet provides a fascinating insight into how he reacted to the turmoil and aftermathof the conflict. The title suggests it was inspired by the Cotswold landscape of which he was fond; this is indeed the case but it is haunted by the memories of departed friends with whom the landscape had once been shared.

Symphonic Episode ~ Episodio Sinfónico-Al-Manzah nowadays called Almansa is a town of Muslim origin. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-mansah meaning “the watchtower”. On a rocky peak above the town stands an impressive castle from where it is possible to admire the Spanish Levant(the Mediterranean coast of the Valencian region) from the Meseta (a high plateau in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula). This is a delightful and festive piece which is both pleasant to listen to and exciting to play.
