For piano-Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontsovka in the Ukraine on the 23rd of April 1891. Soon showing a talent for piano and composition by the time he was fourteen he was attending the St. Petersburg Conservatoire where he received extensive schooling inpiano harmony composition and conducting. Prokofiev was greatly interested in contemporary composers (Reger dIndy Debussy and Richard Strauss) and quickly made a name for himself with his revolutionary aesthetic language of great harmonic andrhythmic impact. His compositions were inspired by Symbolism and Futurism two artistic movements predominate at the time. Prokofiev attracted attention through his early works – the Etudes Op.2 and the Pieces Op. 3 and 4 – owing to his specialtechnique and percussive treatment of the piano (similar in some respects to Bartok) although he was also capable of rich melodic invention.Actually composed in 1907-08 before his Four Etudes for Piano Op. 2 Prokofiev’s Four Pieces for Piano Op. 3 and 4 were only published in 1911. Concert pieces some show Scriabin’s influence on the composer especially in the titles.

All Glory Be to God on High-Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina a mass for choir soprano and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can at the director’s discretion be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

Liebesträume (German for ‘Dreams of Love’) is a set of three solo Piano works by Franz Liszt published in 1850. Two versions appeared simultaneously: for high Voice and Piano as well as as transcriptions for Piano two-hands. The three poems depict three different forms of love. Uhland's ‘Hohe Liebe’ is saintly or religious love: the 'martyr' renounces worldly love and'heaven has opened its gates'. The second song ‘Seliger Tod’ is often known by its first line and evokes erotic love. Freiligrath's poem for the famous third notturno is about unconditional mature love ('Love as long as youcan!' 'O lieb so lang du lieben kannst'). This edition of the latter Liebestraume No. 3 is transcribed for Violin and Piano. The same melody is used throughout the entire popular piece each time varied especially near the middle of the work where the climax is reached. This favourite Piano classic should be a staple in any pianists repertoire and is a great new addition to the Violin programme as well!

The title is taken from the American philosopher and poet Henry David Thoreau’s novel from 1854 about living in the woods which Thoreau did for two years. His stay there was an experiment an attempt to strip away all the artificial needs imposed by society and rediscover man’s lost unity with nature. In that particular sense his novel is a documentation of social inadequacy and a work of poetry (Utopia) as well. All thought Thoreau himself never completed any actual social analysis he was way ahead of his own time in his perception of the economy and cyclic character of Nature today knownas ecology. His ideas are particularly relevant now that pollution caused by society has reached alarming proportions. Walden was written in a style of re-cycling and “new simplicity”. A lot of superfluous material has been peeled away in order to give space to different qualities such as identity and clarity. Various layers are encountered in the quintet such as the organic (growth flowering Decay) concretism (mechanical patterns) and finally the descriptive (distant horn calls and other ghost-like music of the past enter our consciousness like a dream). Walden consist of four movements. In 1995 another version for reed quintet was written to the Calefax Reed Quintet. Het lied is melodieus en de harmonisatie is prachtig. Bij een incomplete bezetting biedt dit arrangement alternatieven voor verschillende partijen. Het werk is geschikt als oefenstuk (met het accent op de toonvorming) maar zeker ook als toegift.
