Suite for Orchestra- Incidental music with the famous 'Sicilienne' Fauré wrote “Pelléas et Mélisande” in 1898 originally as incidental music to Maurice Maeterlinck’s like-named play. After the premiere and subsequent performances he set about reworking the musical material into an orchestral suite. The premiere of the originally three-movement suite took place in February 1901 under the baton of Camille Chevillard. In December 1912 the four-movement version of “Pelléas et Mélisande” was finally premiered. The additional movement the Sicilienne was taken from the third interlude of the incidental music. This delightful piece would later become one of Fauré’s mostpopular compositions and now exists in countless arrangements. Bärenreiter’s new scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement orchestral suite “Pelléas et Mélisande” Op.80 is based on “ Gabriel Fauré The Complete Works” Volume IV/2 which appeared in 2016. Medium Voice in A-Flat and Piano-Sheet Music The popular American Christmas carol The Birthday Of A King was written c.1890 by William Neidlinger. It contrasts the humble little village of Bethlehem with the glory and greatness of Jesus Christ who was born there. Famously recorded by Judy Garland for Decca Records in 1941 it has been a favourite of the repertoire for over 125 years. William H. Neidlinger (1863-1924) was an organist singing teacher and composer who wrote several pedagogical works. His interest in child psychology led him to abandon music and start a school for disadvantaged children where he put his theories of music education into practice. Morton Gould 's Hallelujah Amen from 'Quotations' for Double Chorus of Mixed Voices and Wind Orchestra. Piano reduction. This work was commissioned by L. Anthony Fisher for the New York Choral Society Robert DeComier conductor and first performed by them on January 28 1983 at Carnegie Hall. The composer after thinking over the possible approaches to a choral work found the ide of platitudes common sayings and poetic referenmces challanging and stimulating. As 'Quotations' evolved he found that these sayings evoked nostalgic momories of his own childhood in Richmond Hill New York where he was reared on such aphorisms as 'theearly bird catches the worm ' 'a stitch in time saves nine ' 'a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.' After setting the scene in Richmond Hill the piece begins with Hallelujah Amen the common shout for joy and closing whisper of all religions. An antiphonal series of platitudes follows and then moves to more complex secular litanies the 'ballads ' or stories of young love and old age and the precariousness of life which have been told and retold through the ages. In the last movement the religious litany resumes with 'ashes to ashes dust to dust' echoing the earlier prosaic motif 'here today gone tomorrow ' or as Gould finally writes 'time's up!'
