A suite of passionate and atmospheric songs for choir and orchestra with poetry by the archaic female Greek poet Sappho in a new translation by Alasdair Middleton. Sappho lived over 2 500 years ago. Of the thousands of lines of lyric poetry she is believed to have written only a few hundred survive and with the exception of one complete poem all that remain are fragments. Jonathan Dove uses six fragments of text in the work. Four of the fragments are songs of love in different forms framed by an evocation of the goddess of love and a vision of the moon. Rhythmic vibrancy memorable melodies and vivid orchestral colours all combine in a seductive work that dazzles andinspires. A spirited musical retelling of a timeless Jewish folktale about the consequences of gossip. Attributed to a Hasidic scholar commonly referred to as the Baal Shem Tov (ca. 1700–1760) the parable tells of a man who circulates a false rumor about the town rabbi causing the villagers to lose faith in their trusted leader. When the man goes to beg the rabbi’s forgiveness for damaging his reputation the rabbi tells the man that he may return and ask for forgiveness only after he has released the feathers from a pillow and gathered them all up again. The impossible task serves as a powerful metaphor for the far-reaching effects of gossip and the inability to reverse its harm. This colorful setting pairs the fable sung in Yiddish with a spoken narration of the story in English to be delivered by individual choristers. The final chorale setting of a medieval Hebrew meditation on Psalm 34 delivers the moral of the story. The music draws upon evocative motifs from the Jewish musical tradition with a contemporary sensibility. The origin of the melody My Country ’Tis of Thee is not known but assumed to generate from Europe. The melody is also used for the national anthem of the United Kingdom God Save the Queen. The text for My Country ’Tis of Thee was written by Samuel Francis Smith and was given its first public performance on July 4th 1831 at an Independence Day celebration in Boston. It was published a year later under the title America. This arrangement was performed at the Capitol for the Inauguration of Donald Trump 45th President of the United States on 20th January 2017. Required to be an unaccompanied arrangement it follows a theme and variations structure where the melody is passedthroughout the choir. Due to the nature of the event this arrangement is deliberately “ceremonial” in feel. Duration: 2:15 The origin of the melody My Country ’Tis of Thee is not known but assumed to generate from Europe. We are constantly bombarded with language and images that challenge us to consider our world from many points of view. This is important but perhaps even more important is what do we do with all these viewpoints. How shall we live? We all make choices as to how we respond to our world. This piece with a strong gospel music feel offers a positive and encouraging response to the decisions of life and how we choose to live it. For optional treble solo and two-part treble chorus and piano. A deeply moving lament that perfectly captures the feelings of the African-American slaves. Their existence was so dire that “going home” in death was for many a welcome relief. This arrangement has a slow jazz feel but is reverent and dignified. The texture is wonderfully varied through the use of homophony ostinati and imitation. A new musical setting of an exquisite text by Thomas Campion (1567-1620). While not overtly religious Campion’s text inspires us in its spirituality hope and faith to believe in a power greater than ourselves. Capturing both the wonder and the joy and optimism of winter. Words and music of possibility and energy of life in motion. Unlike many of Sara Teasdale's poems which struggle with depression here she exudes the joy of a bright and fabulously frigid winter afternoon. From the mysterious to the glorious Biery perfectly captures the wide-ranging moods of this text set to the enduring tune EBENEZER. This hymn concertato was written for the Schola Cantorum of Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne Indiana in observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. So it's no surprise that the setting has considerable sweep and gravitas with some fresh harmonic twists. A beautiful choir-only section spans stanzas three and four in major tonalities that nicely complement the staid minor of the rest of the hymn. The sixth and final stanza is unison with descant and concludes with a choir Alleluia and Amen. Stirring and majestic.
