Looking On Darkness for Accordion solo was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2000. Programme note: It is in the attempt to recreate a lost world without any illusion of its feasibility that we find the Danish composer Bent Sørensen's beautiful and melancholic music. Sørensen one of the most frequently performed contemporary Scandinavian composers has taken the title Looking on Darkness from Shakespeare's Sonnet No. 27. The thematic and intellectually clearly constructed form in which the inherent emotion is centrally placed and which characterises the sonnet also forms the basis of Sørensen'scomposition which is dedicated to Frode Haltli. As in Shakespeare's sonnet the past memory arises in Sørensen's music as it were out of nothing out of the darkness the silence; the concrete rattle of the accordion buttons and the sensitive dripping notes in the opening section vibrate on the borderline between the concrete and the hereafter. Loss and mourning for that which is lost and will never come again flow into the fleeting and poetic tones and meld together; the music oscillates lingers holds tightly to the absence slackens its grip tries again moves carefully onwards like the fragmentary memories in Samuel Beckett's late prose before the sorrowful voice of the piece just as beautiful and unobtrusive withdraws again and leaves us to the silence to what used to be.

Programme note Gustav Mahler: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (arr.: Holten 2010) is an arrangement for baritone soloist and 8-part choir of one of Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder. There is already an often performed arrangement for 16-voice choir by Clytus Gottwald which Holten has himself conducted a few times. But Holten does not really think that Gottwald does justice toMahler's song; among other things it lacks a soloist who can express the Ich that is so central to the text. Holten takes his cue from Mahler's piano setting but with Mahler's own sublime orchestral setting firmly in mind. The choir thus functions as an (orchestral) accompaniment for the soloist. Holten has taken pains to stay as close to the model as possible within the constraints of what in fact can be sung by a choir. This new publication replaces the old Latham edition (now out of print) - popular title on both ABRSM and TG double bass syllabuses (grade 7). Dennis Leogrande writes: I began writing the melody first although every piece begins differently. I wanted to begin with a sound that for me is very characteristic of the bass that being the ½ step slide from G# to A. Looking throughout the piece you will notice other slides ie. bars 1 3 5 7 12 14 16 18 38 58 114 116 18 120 123 125 and 127. Please don't forget to notice the grace note slide in measure 100. These are the melodic motifs that give the piece its character and act as hooks(memorable ideas) for the listener to latch on to. Once I began writing the melody it just grew organically from the original idea. I hope you feel the same organic growth. The shifting harmonic tonalities (between D major and D minor) seem to ask the question 'May I?' and keep the listener involved in trying to answer the question. The jazz style keeps the 'question' light hearted a little 'tongue in cheek.' However playing this piece requires attention to these details and a great deal of musicianship. It's the fine musician who understands both the music and the instrument who can make a difficult and complicated piece sound easy light and fun. Oh and yes please enjoy!
