20 progressive studies for Bb Clarinet-Everyone loves Latin music which has been a particular favourite genre of mine to write in having grown up listening to jazz bands and playing in them as a teenager. Most people can name a handful of the more well-known dances (thanks to the popularity of Strictly Come Dancing!) but I knew there were many more lesser-known Latin styles out there. So in August 2015 I decided to research some of the many dance forms of the Caribbean and South America. After listening to these and discovering a little of their history and musical characteristics I decided to write my own versions as a set of 20 pieces. Latin Lovelies is the result. This collection by Jayson Mackie contains 20 solo compositions in a Latin style for the Clarinet. Programme Note WHIRLS´ WORLD (1970) for wind quintet. Whirl´s World was composed in 1970 as one of a series of works which explored the so-called musical ´difference-phenomenon´. This term (which I coined in connection with a series of lectures in California that year) indicates a motivic duplicity in which two - often very simple - melodic ideas come ´out of phrase´ with each other giving rise to a course of constantly changing conditions. In Whirl´s World the difference phenomenon is heard from the beginning where a three-note motif and a four-note motif are set against each other. It all proceeds lake a lightning-fast series of chess moves first note number 1 of thethree-note motif is moved then note number 1 of the four-note motif thereafter note number 2 of the three-note motif - and so on. This fast opening flows into a slow section in which the differences now appear as ´fluctuations´ between very closely related tones (of which one is sung by the musician). There is only one movement built up as an organic growth from slow to furiously fast whirling and back again to slow which can be heard as ´slow-motion whirls´ as a water-world of ripples and bubbles. All this is framed by the introduction described above and a corresponding conclusion in which the movement is now descending ending in the resolute bass full-stop. 2007 Version- Per Norgard's Helle Nacht (Light Night) - Violin Concerto No. 1 dating from 1986-87. Version for Violin solo and small Orchestra (Sinfonietta). Programme note by the composer: This is my third work for solo string instrument and orchestra the other two being 'Between' for cello and 'Remembering Child' for viola. The title 'Light Night' refers to the characteristics of each of the four movements. The 'light' translucent quality of the melody sound and rhythm woven into a fine filigree; the Night revealed in the multi-layered possibilities of interpretation like/constantly/changing theaspect of a turning prism with each performing appearing differently to the listeners. Of course this is more or less the case with every musical work but in HELLE NACHT the ambiguity is made innermost principle. The first and last movements form a symphonic frame for the inner two more static interludes. Though even in these sections light is constantly breaking through in a spectral way. The concerto was composed during 1986-87 and premiered by Anton Kontra. The sinfonietta version was premiered by Peter Herresthal and Remix Ensemble in 2007.

Wish You Were Here written for the Boston Pops pays homage to Colin McPhee one of the first western musicologists to study Balinese gamelan as well as to the great illustrators Carl Barks and Herge (responsible for Donald Duck & Tintin respectively). Muhly has written a completely romantic and fanciful gamelan-influenced piece. On top of this twittery and excited music a long lonesome melody unfolds. After a desolate interlude with severe ship's-horn brass the energetic patterns start again and the long line returns this time with a triumphant revelatory ending. Arranged for orchestra this piece has a duration of approximately 8 minutes.
