Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010 an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura which has Sanskrit roots meaning ‘Lion City’. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!

Op. 79- Brahms’ vivacious “Rhapsodies” op. 79 of 1879 are among his most frequently played works. He had a hard time finding a suitable title for them vacillating between “Piano Piece” “Capriccio” (No. 1) and ”Caprices”. His hand was forced by the dedicatee Elisabeth von Herzogenberg who welcomed the pieces with the salutation “Ye (to me) nameless ones in the nebulous garb of rhapsodies”. The “Teufelsbrücke” (devil’s bridge) is a very old bridge connecting the Göschenen and Andermatt valleys in the canton of Uri central Switzerland. Legend has it that in the 13th century the people of Uri made a pact with the devil to build a bridge across the canyon. When the people only delivered a goat in payment of the soul demanded by the devil he was angry and decided to knock down the bridge. An old woman painted the sign of a cross on the rock the devil was intending to destroy the bridge with and the devil unable to lift it disappeared forever. The rock remains to this day at the northern entry of the Gotthard tunnel.

For the Piano-Debussy was a unique and progressive composer whose independent approach to form harmony and colour dominates his piano pieces. The Children's Corner Suite composed between 1906 and 1908 is not necessarily intended to be played by children or even to children but is intended to capture the essence of childhood with charm grace and humour. The music was inspired by and reflects the world of childhood fantasy. It was once described as portraying the games escapades and gestures of a small girl from Paris. Debussy's intention was to create moods and sensations and utilising his typical harmonic richness and mastery of the impressionistic style he succeeds inan appealing and joyous fashion.

for Flute Clarinet or Alto Saxophone and Concert Band-En 2008 Philip Sparke publiait ses Super Solos troisième et dernier volume d’une collection de solos instrumentaux (pour Flûte Clarinette Saxophone Alto Trompette Cor Trombone et Euphonium) plébiscités par les jeunes musiciens du monde entier et plus particulièrement par le jeune flûtiste allemand Meinhard Drescher. À la demande du père de ce dernier Philip Sparke a extrait trois pièces du recueil - Little Overture • Berceuse • Moto Perpetuo - pour en faire un « mini-concerto » pour Flûte traversière et Orchestre d’Harmonie. Meinhard Drescher reçut ce concerto comme cadeau pour son seizième anniversaire. Il en assura la création le 18 octobre2009. Concertino Classico est structuré selon le schéma classique du concerto : vif - lent - vif. La partie solo peut également être confiée à la Clarinette ou au Saxophone Alto.
