Brahms completed his Cello Sonata Op.99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the Cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the Piano. Even though the work was generally received positively it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the Cello repertoire. Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists Becker and Klengel had aconnection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. As such the Barenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms ' contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked Urtext part. An important part of this edition is the extensive Preface. Firstly it informs about the work's origin early performances its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms ' death a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms ' notation with regard to rhythm and timing dynamics and accentuation dots and strokes slurring and non legato Piano pedalling and overholding Piano arpeggiation and dislocation String Instrument fingering String Instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight into Romantic musical interpretation. - A pioneering Urtext edition. - With an unmarked Urtext part. - With a second part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of contemporaries of Brahms . - With

BWV 870-893-The Well-Tempered Clavier II BWV 870-893 - 48 Preludes & Fugues. Harpsichord Piano. Johann Sebastian Bach's idea of composing a collection of preludes and fugues in all major and minor keys was new and revolutionary in the second decade of the 18th century particularly when considering that the tuning in use up top then distributed pure and “impure” intervals irregularly throughout the keys. The result was that one could play very well in many keys but not at all in others. Bach was the first composer to conquer the entire breadth pf tonality in his Das Wohltemperirte Clavier (The Well-Tempered Clavier) thus providing the musical world with amasterpiece of keyboard literature. ”The ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’ is the Old Testament Beethoven's sonatas the New. We must believe in both.” Hans von Bülow The preludes and fugues of “The Well-Tempered Clavier” embrace an entire cosmos of compositional devices and musical characters – the “ne plus ultra” of ‘unity through diversity’. Here Bach not only presented the sum total of keyboard artistry in his day but foresaw its future evolution. His treatment of the keys marked a turning point in music history.

Arranged for two pianos by Leonard Bernstein-From the time of Copland's first visit to Mexico City in 1932 when his friend Carlos Chávez took him to a nightclub called El Salón México Copland wanted to compose a piece about the unusual dance hall. He said I was attracted by the spirit of the place and by the Mexican people. Using Mexican melodies seemed appropriate. My purpose was not merely to quote literally but to heighten without in any way falsifying the natural simplicity of Mexican tunes. Much to Copland's surprise and delight El Salón México was welcomed warmly in Mexico and has consistently been one of his most performed pieces. He said Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the kind of acceptance for thepiece! 2 Pianos 4 Hands. Copland A

Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band “Pershings Own” led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. Washington D.C. contains some of the world’s most iconic monuments memorials and statues. Philip Sparke has chosenthree of these as the inspiration for this piece: ‘The Lincoln Memorial’ in the form of a Greek Doric temple in which the composer depicts the grandeur of this monument; ‘The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial’ on which steps the iconic speech ‘I havea dream’ was given - the music is both reverential as well as powerful referring to Martin Luther Kings’ speech; and the ‘Encore’ statue in memory of the world famousAfrican-American composer pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this finalmovement Philip Sparke catches the virtuosic energetic and unique dynamism of Ellingtons’ music.

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundus” the motto of the British Corps of Army Music who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace . A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!

G minor BWV 1058- In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe). The Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings in G minor BWV 1058 is the last complete work in the original autograph score of harpsichord concertos that Bach wrote out in or around 1738 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. Ms. Bach 234). However it only came to occupy this position later when the manuscript wasbound. It stands at the very outset of the genesis of this group of works and marks the earliest stage in Bach's efforts to transform concertos for melody instrument and strings into harpsichord concertos. In this case the original model the Concerto for Violin and Strings in A minor (BWV 1041) has survived thereby allowing us to examine Bach's technique of arrangement in detail. - Urtext of the New Bach Edition - Full score & parts (BA5230) two-keyboard reduction (BA5230-90) and study score (TP410) format 22.5 x 16.5cm (all 6 concertos) available for sale
