Six Poems-Elliot Carter's In Sleep In Thunder was first performed at St. John's Smith Square in London on October 26th 1982 by the tenor Martyn Hill with the London Sinonietta. Elliot Carter was comissioned by the London Sinfonietta and In Sleep In Thunder was the result. It is a song cycle on the verse of Robert Lowell whom Carter had been considering setting some of his work to music. In Sleep In Thunder is made up of six songs written for tenor and fourteen instruments. This score that reflects Lowell's words of very human qualities in an ongoing but coherent change throughout produces a very evocative piece of music.

The St. John Passion was first performed in Leipzig on Good Friday of 1724. Written three years before the St. Matthew Passion it was a work Bach revised during the rest of his life in fact he did not leave us a definitive version either in print or fair copy. The sources give evidence of four different versions used at four performances - 1724 1725 around 1730 and during the last years of Bach 's life. They often contain two or more readings for the same passage or even different movements that on different occasions occupied the same place in the work. Barenreiter's edition uses the final version IV as its basis with alternativemovements and readings contained in the appendices. A comprehensive preface in the study score (German/English) TP197 gives full information. - Full score performance material (BA5037) vocal score (BA5037-90) and study score (TP197) available for sale.

These Piano miniatures are a distinctive and unusual addition to the teaching literature – genre paintings in contrasting styles with musical wit and inventive sounds and rhythms. They offer glimpses into the musical cultures of different countries (Hunting in Hungary Gamelan Balkan Dance African Games) and music history (Medieval Feast for the Left-Handers). Besides training finger technique the pieces help students to think in terms of counterpoint and to develop an expressive delivery. Peter Graham (actually Jaroslav Š astný b. 1952) teaches composition at the Janá ek Academy of Arts in Brno. - Miniature recital pieces for Piano withamusing illustrations by Andrea Tachezy. - A welcome addition to the Piano teaching literature. - Simple and entertaining genre paintings. - Easy to moderate level of difficulty.

Philip Sparke selected two well-known marches from the region around Southern Belgium and Luxembourg as the basis for his March Celebration : after we hear an original march theme and second theme in the bass extracts from the Hämmelsmarsh (Hammelmarsch) and the spirited Marsch der Ardennen-Jäger which has become a kind of unofficial national anthem in these parts. This festive march is rounded off with another appearance of Philip Sparke’s original theme.

Rachmaninov regarded his choral symphony The Bells Op.35 to be his greatest work set to the poem by Edgar Allan Poe. The poem is a representation of life from the nimbleness of youth to the pain of age and this symphony is divided into four movements representing marriage birth terror and death. The work is scored for Soprano Tenor and Baritone soloists with Choir and large Orchestra. The first movement subtitled The Silver Sleigh Bells uses typically rich post-Romantic harmonies and is effervescent and joyous in mood featuring a prominent Tenor part. The second subtitled The Mellow Wedding Bells features the soprano soloist andconcentrates on the more passionate and intimate moments associated with weddings. The third movement subtitled The Loud Alarum Bells is a rousing and threatening Presto representing terror with frightening and demonic outbursts. The final movement subtitled The Mournful Iron Bells is gloomy cold and dispiriting. With the Baritone singing about the ‘quiet of the tomb’ the piece ends reflecting on the aspects of death as the music turns sad and warmly Romantic. Available here is the Boosey And Hawkes Pocket Score edition (No.898) of Rachmaninov’s impressive and moving choral symphony The Bells Op.35 and is ideal for study and perusal usage.

Mozart composed the majority of his works for solo String Instruments and Orchestra during the years 1773 to 1779. Especially important in this context are the years 1773 and 1775 which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and Orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity in this domain lie partly in the fact that Mozart who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility of experimenting withall the new compositional techniques acquired during his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773. The Piano reduction of Mozart ’s G Major Violin Concerto is easier to play uncluttered and practical with page turns where you need them and where necessary fold-out pages. The solo part gives players the critical Urtext of the New Mozart Edition. The tutti passages are all presented in normal size print for players wanting to perform these sections with the first Violins. An ossia has been included in small print for the last four measures before the first solo passage to allow for the transition to the solo section. A prepared performance part is also included with bowings fingerings and performance practice comments. An additional brochure is included with todays most performed cadenzas ”Eingänge” and fermata embellishments by Eugène Ysaÿe Leopold Auer Sam Franko and Martin Wulfhorst. This collection offers players a spectrum of styles available in no other publication. Urtext of the New Mozart Edition Full score and parts (BA4865) Violin and Piano reduction (BA4865-90) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP272) available for sale.
