Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten- Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled ‘Trostlied’ literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach’s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan’s arrangement the choral is heard twice once alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time without interruption reflecting the composer’s original intention - a song of consolation.

In each part a particular orchestral aspect is the central point. The eight parts 1. Choral : ensemble in monophonic texture. 2. Air : relatively free line patterns combined with a constant pulse. 3. Pavana : constant rhythmicity culminating in an orchestral tutti. 4. Lullaby : dissonant harmonyabove an organ point in a filigree instrumentation. 5. Chaconne : color and virtuosity combined with a rigid pasacaglian theme. 6. Interlude : antithesis woodwind/brass and followed by a synthesis of the before. 7. Fugue : ensemble in a polyphonic texture. 8. Epilogue : final canto in a preponderating strong dynamic where a constant euphony has to be pursued.

Commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for their 2012 convention here is the first major work from the pen of Rosephanye Powell. With text from the Book of Jeremiah the four movements follow the prophet's feelings of abandonment and redemption by God. Powell combines this ancient text with music that draws simultaneously from the African American musical heritage as well as the classical music traditions.
