When Queen Caroline the wife of King George II of England died on 20 November 1737 Handel was commissioned to write an anthem for her funeral service. She was buried in King Henry VII’s Chapel Westminster Abbey on the evening of 17 December 1737 with Handel’s work performed after the funeral service. To emphasize the solemnity of the occasion he used a roughly 100-piece Orchestra and 80 Choristers. The piece is a so-called “full anthem” consisting of an instrumental Introduction (“Symphony”) and thirteen interlinked choruses. The words were written by Edward Willes the Sub-Dean of Westminster at that time using passages from the King James Bible and theBook of Common Prayer albeit sometimes departing from the original wording. The absence of sections for solo voice has made this anthem a favourite among ambitious choruses and a highlight of any concert programme. Our edition contains the original unabridged version with English text. Martin Focke’s Piano reduction follows the Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition. Original unabridged version. Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition. Straightforward easy-to-play Piano reduction. Full score performance material (BA4267) and Vocal score (BA4267-90) based on the Urtext Halle Handel Edition available for sale.

There are composers about whom nothing or only little is known who are only known through their works or even through one work only. Luigi Carvelli is one of them: He lived in the second half of the 19th century and died after the turn of the century. Carvelli is supposed to have been a hornist in the area of Torino/Milan and played at the world premiere of Verdi's 'Falstaff'. The only extant work is his 'Serenata Napolitana' – a delightfully catchy and melodious little piece ideal as a little performance piece for lessons or as an encore as a special treat after a major sonata programme.

Lucio Silla K. 135 Dramma per musica in three acts On 13 December 1769 Leopold Mozart and his son Wolfgang set out on their first tour of Italy. It was not until 28 March 1771 that they finally returned to Salzburg. The trip brought the young composer two commissions for opere serie. In March 1770 he was commissioned to write Mitridate K.87 (74a) for the 1770-71 Carneval season at the Regio Ducal Teatro in Milan. Mozart started work on the opera in Bologna on 29 September 1770 and the première duly took place on the Feast of St. Stephen (26 December) in 1770. The second Lucio Silla (K. 135) again commissioned for the 1771-72 Carneval season inMilan doubtless resulted from the success of Mitridate. News of the commission reached the Mozarts in March 1771 in Verona where they had stopped on their return to Salzburg. (At roughly the same time Wolfgang received an invitation from Vienna to supply a serenata teatrale for the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand the third son of Maria Theresia scheduled to take place in Milan in October 1771. This invitation ultimately resulted in Ascanio in Alba K. 111.) - Urtext of the New Mozart Edition - Full score (BA4590-01) and vocal score (BA4590-90) available for sale - Performance material (BA4590-72) available for hire

A Selection of Renaissance Tunes-Steven Rosenberg writes in the preface:This book is intended to give recorder players a repertoire of solo pieces from the Renaissance. Solo literature for the recorder is often dominated by music of the baroque era while the music of Renaissance is primarily preformed by consorts. I hope that this collection will expand the solo repertoire by bringing to recorder players some of the most beautiful melodies of this period. I have performed all of these pieces in public and have taken care only to include music that is of performance quality. Some of the pieces are grouped in suites but you should feel free to play them in the order of your choice. For those of you equally athome on descant (soprano) and treble (alto) fell free to intersperse pieces from the companion book for descant recorder. The edition is part of the ABRSM Summer 2006 syllabus (grades 1-3) and the Trinity syllabus 2007 (grade 6). Repertoire peices for solo treble recorder fromt he Renaissance period. Includes works by Susato Dowland Phalese and Ortiz

' My wife Jane is an oboist so for many years I have listened most patiently to moans about reeds and unsympathetic composers who don't understand the instrument. I hope these little pieces come some way to redress the second problem. Four of the pieces are unaccompanied and exploit the lonely haunting quality of the Oboe which daily echoes around our house. One of them (guess which) was composed during a power cut and first played by candlelight .' Guy Woolfenden .

John La Montaine was already an accomplished concert Pianist when he came to public notice as a composer in the late 1950's. He won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1959 for his First Piano Concerto and was commissioned to write the music for John F Kennedy's Presidential Inauguration in 1961. His sonata in four movements for unaccompanied Flute is dedicated to Paul Renzi who was principal Flute of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1957 when it was published. In his obituary of La Montaine in the New York Times Paul Vitello writes 'Mr LaMontaine's music was lyrical and for the most part traditional with a neo-Romantic streak reflected in hisembrace of poetry American themes and the natural landscape.'
