The conductor Hermann Levi a friend of Brahms prepared a piano-vocal score of the work in 1871 prior to the works publication. Brahms revised it upon receiving it. He wanted a symphonic sound from the piano part; what he created fully corresponds to the monumentality of the Song of Destiny. Piano Vocal Score by Hermann Levi und Johannes Brahms. New Edition with a preface by Ulrich Mahlert.

The chorus score contains no Piano reduction or solo parts - for full Vocal score (with Piano reduction) see BA7674-90. Today the “Gloria” RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi ’s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred Vocal works from the Baroque period. Vivaldi wrote the “ Gloria ” as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Pietà around 1716. In the twelve movements of the “Gloria” Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements to tender transparently scored solo passages. The same mastery has also been applied to the “Kyrie” RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. The Piano reductions are straightforward clearly presented and preserve the character of the works. - Attractive Choral pieces which can be combined to form a short mass. - Vocal score as well as choral score available for the “Gloria”. - Informative foreword (Ger/Eng).

Robert Schumann was the first to transport the lyrical character piece for piano to the domain of chamber music. He drew upon the form stamped by Schubert Mendelssohn himself and many others since about 1820 to create a series of cycles in duo combinations. With his Märchenbilder Schumann created in 1851 the first important and path-breaking composition for viola and piano that was not written in sonata or variation form.

Until just before Handel ’s first visit to England the only instrument permitted to accompany the service in the Chapel Royal was the organ. These four works with their orchestral accompaniments thus represent something akin to a new genre in English church music. The four anthems are presented in clearly laid out vocal scores with straightforward piano reductions based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition. Their enticingly varied and self-sufficient orchestral writing provides a suitable framework for the festive chorus and equally festive solo numbers. Today they sound as splendid as ever! The full scores and vocal scores also contain a German translation along with the original English text.

Ballet- Bernstein's first composition in the genre Fancy Free composed in 1944 became extremely popular. The story of the ballet is fairly simple and was later reused by Bernstein in On The Town his popular first Broadway musical. The story devised by Jerome Robbins takes place in New York City where three sailors on shore leave meet three girls in a bar who they dance with and end up fighting over. They soon realize they were foolish to let the women become between their friendships. The music is based on a considerable number of popular styles of the day. At the beginning you hear Big Stuff a popular hit Bernstein later recordedas a single and made famous by Billie Holiday. Bernstein's music is comprised of a fusion of different genres from Latin-American to Popular and Classical to Jazz all of which are footprints in his inimitable style. Available here as part of the Hawkes Pocket Score edition (No.1135) is the Study Score for Bernstein's popular ballet Fancy Free .

Quarter Military Band QMB 511- The 1970s saw a number of religious rock musicals notably Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell and Bernstein was so impressed by the latter that he invited 23-year-old writer Stephen Schwartz to provide lyrics for Mass—once again Bernstein reached beyond his own world of classical music for a collaborator to help him create a large-scale musical theater piece as he had with West Side Story. Mass was Bernstein's most ambitious theater work. Despite its adaptation of the Latin text interspersed with songs 'numbers ' choreographic sequences and symphonic interludes Mass is ecumenical in nature and cannot be categorized. Perhaps the most accurate description of the piece is 'pageant.' With approximately 200 performers including dancers singers a boy chorus rock and blues singers actors and two orchestras as well as a marching band—who play through the audience—Mass is a musical and theatrical experience. Bernstein's Meditation No 2 allows both audience and celebrant a moment of contemplation.

Mambo Merengue provides an introduction to the world of jazz; it's rhythms harmony and melodic shapes. The pieces demonstrate a variety of jazz styles: Latin blues bebop modal swing and modern. 'Mambo' is believed to be a Haitian Creole word literally meaning 'to talk'. Now 'mambo' is a type of dance derived from the Cuban rumba. Consequently the word combines two of the most appealing aspects of jazz musical conversation and physical movement.

The composer states: “As I began this piece it was as though I were entering a dream. The music was atmospheric undefined and somewhat disorienting. Gradually the material became more focused but just in time to switch to a very different--though related--sound world which became the second movement. The overall poignancy varied sound worlds and dramatic shape of the music suggested the title.” Instrumentation: piccolo flute I flute II oboe clarinet in Eb clarinet in Bb I clarinet in Bb II clarinet in Bb III bass clarinet in Bb bassoon alto saxophone in Eb I alto saxophone in Eb II tenor saxophone in Bb baritone saxophone in Eb trumpet in Bb

Romanza was written as a ballad for the composers wife. The first theme is already introduced in the first two bars with a descending line in the woodwind. After this the chorale-like theme returns in the alto oboe and horn. The theme is then repeated but this time in a close harmony setting in a minor key. Then comes the second theme which is extremely melodious. All the parts of the orchestra complement each other in rendering this theme in its entirety. This second theme is the basis on which to launch a development that ultimately reaches a climax based on the last four bars of the first theme after which the theme returns once more though this time as a solemnchorale by the brass. The finale of the work is a variant of the beginning which completes the circle.
