This revival may have been inspired by historical Hollywood epics by popular dance acts such as ”Riverdance” by Michael Flatley or purely by the emotional power of Celtic melodies. The songs all tell stories that have been passed down through successive generations with more facets than any other kind of traditional music: some are melancholy dirges some playful and lively dance tunes. Lepo Sumera was born in Tallinn Estonia on May 5 1950. He graduated from the Tallinn Conservatoire in1973 where he studied composition with Heino Eller and Heino Jurisalu. He was a consultant at the Estonian SSR Composers' Union from 1978 to 1986. In 1985 Sumera won a State Prize of the Estonian SSR and in 1986 he wasgiven the title of Honored Worker in the Arts of the Estonian SSR. Currently Sumera is the Head of Department of Composition of Musicology at the Tallinn Conservatoire.

This poem by Longfellow is mainly in unison breaking into two parts at the end of stanzas and in the coda where the voices pick up the snowflake motif from the piano. The falling snow is defined by delicate descending piano triplets and and a chant-like vocal line conjures imagery of stark winter landscapes.

for flute viola and harp-Three Shades Without Angles is a piece that plays with the idea of transformation of musical shapes. When writing this piece I was inspired by Auguste Rodin’s sculpture The Three Shades a detail sitting atop the sculptor’s work The Gates of Hell depicting a scene from Dante’s The Inferno. Although my music is not representative or depictive of Dante or an image of hell I was deeply drawn to the sinewy character of Rodin’s work its intensity muscularity consistency and the way in which movement and energy is represented in his shapes - Hannah Lash
