The main body of this work consists of an extended invocation in the style of a polychoral motet based on an anonymous Latin text and ending with a plea for peace. This is preceded by a briefer introductory section based on passages from the Old Testament in which the horrors of violence and oppression are described. This section features the use of several extra-musical effects (whispering hissing finger- and tongue-clicks foot-stamping and indeterminate clusters) most of which form part of the South African choral tradition.SSSSAAAA. Cuba is one of the word’s few remaining communist countries and has a turbulent history behind it in no small part due to the charismatic Fidel Castro who has steered a more Western course in the last few years. Willy Fransen wrote a musical travel piece about the real Havana with illustrations from the local scene enjoying a daiquiri while a live band plays in the Buena Vista Social Club.

Mass in Time of War- Haydn was in England in 1795 when he received word from his new Prince Nicolaus II Esterházy that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister. Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose every year a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined – when preparingthis edition – the music archives of the church and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt. In the tone poem Pan and Syrinx Nielsen began to express some of his more adventurous harmonies and timbres which he then expressed more fully and in more abstract form in his masterpiece Fifth Symphony. Nielsen had an obsession with ancient Greece and its myths and the inspiration for Pan and Syrinx is drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The story concerns the chaste nymph Syrinx who is chased by Pan to the river’s edge where the river nymphs grant her request for assistance bytransforming her into water reeds. From the reeds Pan fashioned his original set of panpipes. Nielsen’s short work expresses the natural world the conflict between the male and female forces the anxiety of chase and transformation and the unsettled ending of the tale. Nielsen frequently chose it for performance when he created a program of his own works. The Orchestral colours are original and striking and display the composer’s restless inventiveness. Indian Sketches-The Dakota (or Sioux) Indians from the American states of North and South Dakota form the central figures in this composition. The work consists of five movements in which the culture and history of these Indians have been portrayed through musical paintings by making use of an old South Dakota Indian melody.
