Linz Symphony- Mozart composed the Symphony In C Major K.425 known as the “Linz Symphony” within a few days in October/early November 1783 in the palace of Count Johann Joseph Anton von Thun-Hohenstein (1711–1798) in Linz where together with Constanze he stayed for three weeks on the way back from a trip to Salzburg. “On Tuesday the fourth of November” wrote Mozart to his father on 31 October (the day after his arrival in Linz) “I will be giving a concert in the theatre – and since I have no symphony with me I am writing one as fast as I can for it must be ready by then”. Accordingly this work was performed for the first time in the theater inLinz on 4 November 1783. Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano he made a few subtle changes particularly in m. 201 which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century. The Te Deum (H 146) is unquestionably the best known composition of Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) especially since its Prélude en rondeau was made the Eurovision signature tune. Although Charpentier set the Te Deum altogether four times this is his only setting employing a military band i.e. trumpets and kettledrums. This brilliant and magnificent piece was frequently played at victory celebrations and other occasions of public jubilation during the 17th century. Even today it is still ideal for festive church services and concerts. Orchestral work commissioned by the BBC and premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andrew Davis The Barbican Hall November 1992. Quoting Lindberg: 'After having written a Piano Concerto in 1991preceded by three works for different orchestral effectives (Kinetics Marea and Joy) I felt that I had come to an end with a certain musical expression and also compositional technique. All these works were based upon anextended chaconne principle with chord chains cycling around undergoing constant transformation and being articulated in a very gestural way. The musical paradox and evidently also the challenge was the discrepancy between abrick-like method expressed in a world of gestures (with all difficulties involved in conceiving music out of phrases) aiming at a continuity in terms of progression and development. After the Piano Concerto in the autumn of1991 I strongly felt that I couldn't continue in that direction anymore. I started to work on a project called Corrente for 16 players as a study for the full orchestra version entitled Corrente II. In order to bring theharmonic and rhythmic world closer to each other I abandoned the chaconne principle and based the harmony on different scale aggregates. By combining these scales and by filtering or by enhancing them with additional pitchesbased on more acoustically oriented views of the scales by considering them as partials of virtual fundamentals I was able to work in a rich harmonic world without actually having to do harmonic transformations and progressions.The rhythmic material was based on pattern figures with a rather kaleidoscopic approach of repetition and variation. By combining these pattern figures and scales aggregates I wanted to give the musical expression a 'narrative'sense of streams and directions moving around in different orchestral constellations.
