Nicolai Mass- The name of the “Missa Sancti Nicolai” refers to the composition of the Mass for St. Nicholas Day in 1772. Every year on this day a Mass was held in honor of the Prince of Esterházy who shared his name-day with St. Nicholas. It is thought that Haydn wrote this composition specifically to thank the Prince for allowing him to return to Eisenstadt. Some years later trumpet and timpani parts were added to the work. As with the “Great Organ Mass” these additional parts were not actually written by Haydn himself but simply authorized by him. They are included in the score and performance material so that both versions can be performed. Urtextfrom the Haydn Complete Edition Performable in both versions Full score performance material (BA4645) vocal score (BA4645-90) available for sale

Handel ’s four anthems were all composed during his London period in the Chapel Royal. “As pants the hart” his fifth setting of this Psalm text was written in March 1738 for performance at a benefit concert for the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket. Until just before Handel ’s first visit to England the only instrument permitted to accompany the service in the Chapel Royal was the Organ. These four works (O sing unto the Lord HWV 249a I will magnify thee HWV 250b As pants the hart HWV 251e Let God arise HWV 256b) with their orchestral accompaniments thus represent something akin to a new genre in English church music. The four anthems arepresented in clearly laid out Vocal scores with easy-to-play Piano reductions based on the Urtext from the “Halle Handel Edition”. Their winningly varied and self-sufficient orchestral writing provides a suitable framework for the festive chorus and the equally festive solo numbers. Today they sound as splendid as ever before. The full scores and Vocal scores also contain a German translation along with the original English. Scoring: - HWV 249a: soloists (AB) chorus (SATB) Flute 2 Oboes 2 Trumpets Strings Continuo. - HWV 250b: soloists (SATB) chorus (SATB) Oboe Strings Continuo. - HWV 251e: soloists (SAATBB) chorus (SAATBB) 2 Oboes Strings Continuo. - HWV 256b: soloists (AB) chorus (SATB) Oboe Strings Continuo. - Urtext from the “Halle Handel Edition” at the forefront of musical scholarship. - First separate editions for performance purposes. - Clear and easy-to-play Piano reductions. - Original English text with underlaid German translation. - Full scores vocal scores and performance material available for sale.

The Benedictus and Agnus Dei in B flat is published as part of an ongoing policy to reissue works by Charles Villiers Stanford in the Autograph Edition in new engravings but as the composer wrote and approved them with no editing from another hand. Simple in texture but highly effective in performance these two short movements are a useful addition to the repertoire of music available for a traditional celebration of Holy Communion and would suit a small church choir with two or three voices per part.

The Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) has been highly regarded in Britain from the time of his first visit in 1829. The highlight of his career came in 1846 when he was commissioned to write the oratorio Elijah for the Birmingham Festival. It remained hugely popular for over eight decades being performed at the Proms every year until 1930. It draws heavily on influences from Bach and Handel both of whom Mendelssohn admired. O Rest In The Lord is an aria from the second act of the oratorio sung by an Angel to Elijah. It is scored for Alto or Contralto Voice with Piano accompaniment.
