Soul Jazz Guitar is a collection of Randy Johnston 's tunes and solos specifically designed for the intermediate student. Rather than merely transcribing solos from his CDs he plays material at areasonable tempo specifically with the student in mind. There are tunes ('Downtime ' 'The Philadelphians ' and 'Rolling at the Summit') that appear on his commercial CDs but included here are versions that are new and totallyunique to this project. There are also some improvisations on some familiar 'standard' progressions to help the student deal with these changes when he or she encounters them at jam sessions etc. Randy has tried topresent his take on the Jazz language as clearly and faithfully as possible to make the solos easy to learn. He hopes that this will lead the student not just to imitation but also to develop his or her own approach to theseprogressions just as he developed his own approach from listening to the playing of his role models over the years.

But not the conventional one immortalised in the 1933 Hollywood film - the terrifying giant ape astride the Empire State Building who clasps the fainting heroine while swiping hopelessly at the planes which eventually send him crashing dead to the ground. This is the American Sign Language (ASL) version which has something of a twist at the end. Squish! was written as Composer-in-Residence with Cuatro Puntos and was commissioned with funds from the Connecticut Officeof the Arts. The premiere took place at the American School for the Deaf (the oldest permanent school for the deaf in the United States founded in 1817) in West Hartford Connecticut on 7th December 2016. This hauntingly beautiful piece is extracted from Rutter's large-scale work Visions. The expressive solo line features long phrases double stopping in thirds and sixths and a quasi-improvised section making it an ideal concert work for advanced Violinists.

The Tiger is a 1995 piece based on the poem The Tiger by William Blake though it is not a straightforward setting of the work. Part of the poem appears in English and a second part in French German Italian and Spanish. The entire poem appears in a compressed central section which has been extracted for a shorter version entitled The Tiglet.British composer Giles Swayne broke into international consciousness with his huge work CRY for twenty-eight amplified Voices premiered by the BBC Singers. He has written many works for Chorus among his oeuvre. Swayne has travelled extensively in Ghana and Senegal and the percussiveness of The Tiger clearly manifests that influence.
