Edward C Bairstow’s compositional output was somewhat hampered by a busy and useful life and the bulk of his compositions were created for the Anglican church. His setting of Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence is widely performed. This setting for The Office for Holy Communion in D is one of three settings he created for the mass. It is an effective and sensitive setting and in particular the pianissimo moment created for ‘And was made man’ and fortissimo phrase just before ‘And the third day’ leading into the double choir passage for the ascension are the work of a great talent immersed in religious understanding.Organist teacher composer and conductor Edward CBairstow (1874 – 1946) spent most of his professional life happily in the role of Organist at York Minster playing teaching leading the choir giving recitals writing music and works of musical pedagogy. When offered the position of Organist at Westminster Abbey Bairstow had no hesitation in declining and remaining in his native Yorkshire. He is best known as a teacher having had a remarkable number of students and for his extreme straightforwardness and high standards for himself his singers and the composers whose work he chose to perform or present.

The German Baroque period featured three virtuosi—Biber Westhoff and Johann Jakob Walther. Walther (1650-1717) performed as a violinist in the orchestra of Cosimo III from 1670 to 1674 (Medici dynasty) and served as concertmaster at the court in Dresden. Walther's compositions are contained in two books: Scherzi da Violino solo con il basso continuo (1676) and Hortulus Chelicus (1688). This book presents six sonatas for violin from Hortulus Chelicus transcribed for the mandolin. The collection is a wonderful addition to the classical mandolin repertoire. A second volume of glorious Turnbull songs for Medium Voice and Piano accompaniment. These eight songs are typical of Turnbull's unostentatious uncluttered style yet one with a great lyricism feature lyrics by esteemed and reverred writers such as Shakespeare Longfellow Thomas Moore and Stevenson and form a beautiful and effective pastiche.

Dirge and Hymeneal was composed in 1915 shortly before the composition of Saturn from The Planets whose music it anticipates. It was performed for the first time at the 1986 Cheltenham Festival. Scored for SSA and piano set to text by Thomas Lovell Beddoes.

Particularly memorable are the jaunty Gloria with its constantly shifting time-signatures and the haunting Agnus Dei. Cecilia McDowall 's Missa Mariae for SSA choir and Organ. This concise Latin mass setting is entirely suitable for liturgical use but the sharply delineated characters of the different movements make it also an appealing concert work. Originally the title for Vaughan Williams's opera Sir John in Love Fat Knight was conceived as a seven-movement orchestral suite that drew upon the opera and had as its central character Shakespeare's Falstaff. Vaughan Williams never completed the work and left only a two-piano score the basis of this realisation.
