Nadia Boulanger's Three Pieces for Viola and Piano Posterity has retained of Nadia Boulanger only her gifts as a virtuoso of the piano and organ her skill as a conductor (of vocal ensemble and orchestra) and most of all her incredible charisma as a teacher. For nearly sixty years Mademoiselle made the most of her famous Wednesdays bringing rigour and passion to the training of several generations of musicians: among so many others Aaron Copland Leonard Bernstein Igor Markevitch Michel Legrand Witold Lutoslawski Astor Piazzolla Quincy Jones and John-Eliot Gardiner have all kept unforgettable memories of these times. Was Nadia Boulanger wrong to let teaching musictake precedence over her composing as Gabriel Fauré the great master she venerated believed? The publication of Three Pieces for Viola and Piano raises the question. This transcription of Three Pieces for cello and piano was composed between 1911 and 1913 and published by Heugel. The two initial pieces were originally written for organ: the first in E flat minor brings a moderate tempo to a melancholy cantilena with Romantic accents while the second in A minor exudes warmth and tenderness. The third piece (C sharp minor) most likely originally titled Danse espagnole heralds the Roaring Twenties with its restlessness and festive crackle. Together they emit a charm that is difficult to resist. Nadia Boulanger's Three Pieces for Viola and Piano transcribed from the original for Cello. Medieval Mandolin Voume 2 by Allan Alexander. These medieval pieces sound great on the mandolin. They also lay right under the fingers. There is both notation and TAB and no page turns for any of the pieces in this book. The reason? This book is made for musicians by musicians. You can get the book with a CD and the guitar and mandolin are separate tracks. You can turn the mandolin totally off and play with the cd. There is no Tick Tick before the pieces instead there are two measures of intro with the guitar so you can sit and listen to the CD and become familiar with the pieces without it sounding like a learning CD. There are chords with the music and at the end of thebook there are examples of what the guitar is doing for many of the tunes in both tablature and notation. These tunes sound terrific and are a great addition to any repertoire. You can use them for any kind of gig or you can try doing some medieval fairs medieval feasts or medieval weddings. The bowl back mandolin looks so much like the lute most people would never know the difference. Often when I play the lute they ask me if it's a mandolin. I play lute guitar and more recently mandolin. I know the music. These pieces are particulary suited for the sound of the mandolin. I love playing them. The book is beautiful and scored professionally. The paper is heavy stock. The titles may not make a lot of sense but these are great pieces. Many have variations to make them longer. The theme from the film El Super this Caribbean-style music is now available for solo piano. New York Rush is the orchestral theme from the award-winning film 'El Super' (1979). The score was recorded in 1981 (KIM Records/K-716). In this solo Piano transcription by the composer all essentialmusical elements are faithfully recreated. The rhythm of the work is a basso ostinato of Caribbean flavour heard throughout. Harmonically an almost exclusive use of the diminished seventh chord with an unresolved appoggiatura isemployed. The melody is a blues counterpointed by restless melodic segments of Latin origins and different timbres.
