The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody the hymnresounds in full glory.

Because of its violent rhythm and exciting character playing a Fanitullen for a long time was considered improper. It was believed that a person playing this melody would come under the influence of the devil. Therefore Fanitullen could be regarded as a kind of Rock’n Roll from the 18th century. Tom Brevik’s adaptation is based on a composition for piano by Ole Olsen (1850-1927) Fanitullen is een levendige mooie ‘Sl?tt’ een oude Noorse melodie die gespeeld word op een traditionele ‘Hardingfele’ (Hardanger viool). Door de heftigeritmiek en het opzwepende karakter werd het spelen van een Fanitullen gedurende lange tijd als niet kies beschouwd. Er zouden invloeden van de duivel in schuilen. Commissioned by and written for Nicola Walker Smith in October 1992 this set of songs takes as its starting point material from The Upside-Down Violin at Expo ’92 in Seville by The Michael Nyman Band and the Orquestra Andalusi de Tetuoan. The Moroccan orchestra plays only monophonically and consequently I wrote a ‘pure’ melody line - that is one not built on harmony. The harmonic content of Anne de Lucy Songs is thus derived from the melody for the first time in my work.
