This work was commissioned by the City of Darmstadt for the Darmstadt State Theatre. It was first performed in September 1988 at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. Written for full orchestra with large percussion section marchingband pop group and electronic vocal quartet. Duration c. 75mins.

Accompanied by one of Shostakovich's most popular and accessible film-scores The Gadfly was a highly successful film inside the Soviet Union in its day a sugary and entertaining costume drama based on a once very popular historical novel by the English writer Ethel Voynich like a cross between The Three Musketeers' and The Scarlet Pimpernel'. The hero is a swashbuckling revolutionary in Risorgimento Italy and the 1830s/1840s Italian setting gives the composer a chance for delicious pastiches in the style of Bellini and Verdi as well as pseudo-Neapolitan songs and folk-tunes. Most famous are the catchy Galop and the syrupyRomance which have been recycled many times in TV shows and advertisements and will quickly appeal to those who prefer their music on the lighter side.

from the Musical 'A Little Night Music'- Send in the Clowns is one of the most well known songs written by composer Stephen Sondheim. The ironic lyrics have a present-day meaning. It was recorded by the likes of Judy Collins Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Between them all they brought this song eternal fame. The Norwegian arranger Richard Johnsen who is very familiar with this musical repertoire made this beautiful arrangement and kept it very close to the sound of the original version.

Clowns And Acrobats is ideal for young dynamic bands. After a short mysterious introduction follows an infectious theme that is varied in different manners. It ends with a spectacular climax yet technically it is not too difficult.

This work is based on a series of four notes that appear in different forms consisting of 4 movements: Northern Men Explorer Raids and Heritage . This celebratory 70th Anniversary instrumental edition of one of the most famous MGM movie musicals features an historical essay and colour and black and white movie photos. Included are classic titles Over the Rainbow We're Off to See the Wizard as well as the song deleted from the movie The Jitterbug and more all arranged and edited for the Level 2-3 instrumental player. Also included is a CD which features live demonstration performances of the instrument tracks.

This piece is scored for Soprano and Piano. A Penny for a Song was written in Autumn 1981 for Penny Price Jones and Philip Martin who commissioned it with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It consists of ten songs prefaced by a piano piece which acts as a refrain heard again between Nos. 6 and 7 and before the last song. All the texts are miniatures; some are haiku a Japanese Zen poetic form and they all have in common a number of Haiku characteristics such as vivid imagery seasonal or natural and allusive brevity. The poems are small but they have a resonance extending far beyond themselves. Zen artists love to play with space: through afew brush strokes they conjure up a world of detail; they suggest infinitely expanding space through the implications of a few lines on a nearly empty background. This has been my approach in the music of A Penny for a Song. The songs are fleeting momentary; they are echoes of a world that is always there if we stop to listen for it.
