American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of‘music with repetitive structures.’ Façades is a work that describes superficial qualities. Philip Glass wrote this piece as part of the soundtrack for the film Koyaanisqatsi but it was not used and so became anindependent work. In fact it became a staple of live performances of the Philip Glass Ensemble during its era (1981). Originally its eerily flowing sonorities were to have accompanied visual scenes of New York’s Wall Streetapocalyptically deserted. The piece was given a new name Glasspiece #2 when it was choreographed for the New York City Ballet. This work is for Flute 1 & 2 OR Saxophone 1 & 2 with string ensemble Violin 1 & 2 Viola andCello. Conceived as a connecting link for orchestra alone between Lutoslawski's Partita and Chain 2 both for orchestra and solo violin. It can however be played independently. First performed as part of a sequence ofmovements in Munich in January 1990 by Anne-Sophie Mutter with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer. John Tavener 'Agraphon' arranged for soprano timpani and strings. Commissioned by the Athens Concert Hall first performed on 29th October 1995. The music contains two symbolic ideas - the first being the opening series ofintervals which appear to be inexhaustible in their multifaceted symbolism representing the music of the spheres. If the angel's song is indeed one of knowledge they could not choose a better theme of harmony. And then thereis the apparent evil of the endless series of spiralling sixths and sevenths falling without apparent hope of redemption through an eternal geometric series down into a hellish realm. Agraphon must be performed with greatintensity literally at the breaking point of intensity and petrification. For the voice the style alternates between European and classical Indian singing; for example the passage beginning on page 12 is entirelysemi-improvised. The singer must listen to many examples of classical Indian music or else be trained by a master. The music ends fiercely at the incomprehensible clash and union between the Divine and the human.
