The ’Low’ Symphony composed in the spring of 1992 is based on the record ‘Low’ by David Bowie and Brian Eno first released in 1977. The record consisted of a number of songs and instrumentals and used techniqueswhich were similar to procedures used by composers working in new and experimental music. As such this record was widely appreciated by musicians working both in the field of ‘pop’ music and in experimental music and was alandmark work of that period. Having taken themes from three of the instrumentals on the record and combining them with material of his own Glass has used them as the basis of three movements of this Symphony. Thisis the Full Score of Glass’ orchestral work.

This well-loved American Hymn dates from the 19th century when the practice of shape-note singing was widespread throughout the country as a way of teaching every citizen to read music and vast outdoor 'camp meetings' were held regularly for the purpose of praise through song. John Jacob Niles's arrangement for Upper Voice Choir (SSA) is true to the musical spirit of the hymn's origins in being modal stirring and largely homophonic.

This traditional American folk song was born on the lips of the voyageurs or fur traders travelling down the Missouri River and then spread across the world as a sea shanty. The exact origins of the tune are uncertain but the song about the celebrated Native American chief Shenandoah and a canoe-going trader who wants to marry his daughter (lyrics vary) dates back to at least to the early 19th century. In this version from G. Schirmer’s Secular Choral Music series Shenandoah is arranged by Marshall Bartholomew for a full chorus of mixed Voices (SATB) to be sung a cappella with Piano accompaniment included for rehearsalpurposes only. While mainly popular with organisations local to the Missouri area this majestic melody is guaranteed to evoke the Wild West in any performance setting.

O Jesus Christ My Life and Light-German/English. Although designated a Cantata this piece for SATB choir is more in the style of a motet. It is composed (and is still suitable) to be played at a funeral the text by Martin Behm being appropriate to this situation. Bach's original orchestration for the accompaniment - two Litui (high horns) Cornetto and three Trombones - is here arranged for Organ or Piano by Ifor Jones who also (with J. M. Stein) translated the text.
