Cantata for the First Sunday of Advent- Nun komm der Heiden Heiland BWV 62 Cantata for the First Sunday of Advent Bach began two of his cantatas (BWV 61 and 62) - belonging to the Weimar and Leipzig periods respectively - with Martin Luther`s Advent hymn 'Nun komm der Heiden Heiland' a German version of the early church hymn 'Veni redemptor gentium'. The cantata can be described as a Choral Cantata typical of Bach's late creative period incorporating the older technical processes of polyphonic chorale settings as well as more modern solo movements. The Celtic poem The Voyage of Bran was the inspiration for this fantasy work by Bert Appermont. The subject of this composition is Febal who - together with his companions - travels to the ‘otherworld’ also known as the Island of the Blessed where he finds nothing but sun and prosperity. The sections called Isle of Joy Land of the Women and The Feast intermingle with Song of the Otherworld which acts as a sort of leitmotif.

In 1892 Josef Suk (1874-1935) a mere 18 years of age contributed his piece Melody to a collection of simple works for Violin (for two three or four Violins and for Violin with Piano accompaniment) called The Young Violinist published by the Prague-based firm Jos. R. Vilimek (several books issued per year). This short charming and technically undemanding piece for young violinists which is possibly more familiar to Czech audiences in arrangements for other combinations of instruments (Violin and Piano or solo Piano) was published once again in its original version for two Violins to mark the 70th anniversary of Suk 's death(2005). The whereabouts of the autograph of this work is unknown; the editor of the new edition Zdenek Nouza based his revisions on the original carefully prepared edition from 1892. The bowings are Suk 's own (he was an excellent violinist) but no fingerings have been added since the piece can be played by violinists of varying technical proficiency; first position alone would suffice however a fuller richer sound would be gained with greater mastery of the instrument.

This is a little salute to the wonderful music of Duke Ellington taking Mood Indigo as its model. Something Borrowed Something Blue will allow the young band to approach this masterpiece?s laid-back style using chords and harmonies that they may be hearing for the first time. Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures Woodland Sketches that has survived as his best-known work with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Britten once referred to this work as his 'real Opus 1' as the themes in the work are themes from his childhood. At school he was expelled for a 'shocking' essay he had written in which he had opposed the practice of blood sports and suggested that the brutal effect of them was in fact a cause of war. This edition is for High Voice with a Piano reduction of the original Orchestral score.

Handel wrote the famous Dixit Dominus with the text of Psalm 109 during his time in Italy in c. 1707. Although he was only 22 years old the work already demonstrates his wide spectrum of compositional abilities which are later fully realized in his operas and oratorios. Central to this work are the six choral movements which – with their polyphonic structure – are closely related to German choral music of the 17th century. The first Urtext edition BA 4002 based on the Halle Handel Edition was published in 1960. At that time no critical commentary was published so that in cases of doubt the basis on which editorialdecisions were made was not officially recorded. A new complete edition volume (BA 10704/01) due to be published in 2013 will include a detailed foreword providing information on the genesis and the first performance of this work as well as information on the psalm on which this work is based and on performance practice. In addition several facsimiles pages will be included giving a view into the source material. The critical commentary will provide a detailed insight into all the available sources and how they have been passed down. This newly revised Urtext performing edition offers a thorough revision of this frequently-performed work and meets all the requisites of a scholarly-critical edition. Former readings in the old edition regarding a small number of pitches but mostly basso continuo figures and the underlying text have now been able to be amended on the basis of the new findings. In the new edition the work appears in nine movements – no longer eight – which reflects the composer's intentions. The new performance material is not compatible with the old one.
