This edition presents a version reviewed and commented by Fernand Caratgé (1902-1991) from the Opéra-Comique. Written for advanced players Sept Exercices Journaliers should strengthen the technique of those with already some developed technique and skill. The composer André Reichert was a virtuoso flautist strongly influenced by Brazilian music. He travelled in Europe and Brazil and was one of the introducers of the modern Boëhm systemof the transverse Flute. Famous in Brazil he also composed a polka and a set of six exercises.

Meditation on 'Quem Pastores Laudavere'-Carol of the Shepherds is based on the hymn tune 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' which dates back to the 14th century and is widely known throughout the Christian world. Although the melody has been set to a number of different texts in different countries it was originally a carol celebrating the Christmas story in particular the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the shepherds.

This edition clarifies a performance aspect of Haydn’s Symphony in G major that has long been misunderstood: in m. 1 of the second movement (Largo) the viola violoncello and several wind instrument parts are marked “solo” indicating that they play important motifs or themes and ought to stand out. Contrary to other editions the “solo” marking in the violoncello should not be construed as indicating a solo instrument with the remaining cellos doubling the basses. Rather the cellos should play as a section so as to stand out all the more clearly. In Haydn ’s day it was customary to play individual movements in church services and it may be assumed that these two movements were performed and possibly composed independently from each other. The hymn used here composed by Paul Eber in 1554 has twelve stanzas. Texts for two recitatives and two arias were written to go with each of stanzas 2 to 10.
