Book 2- Richard Smith 's My Piano My Body And Me - Book 2 develops the holistic approach to technique musicianship and interpretation adopted in the first publication. This book is suitable for students at an intermediate level and covers music from different periods. It charts the Piano's development showing how the larger instruments that emerged at the end of the 19th century made different physical and mental demands on performers. Pianists today are playing very different instruments to their predecessors. This demands close consideration when performing music from the Baroque Classical Romantic and 20thcentury. Why should I approach Baroque music differently to that written in the Romantic period? What is direct pedalling....and finger pedalling? How do I play and count unusual time signatures? These are all questions that My Piano My Body And Me - Book 2 will answer. This book is equally instructive and illuminating as its predecessor and contains another selection of inspiring imaginative pieces specifically written to practise particular skills and techniques - e.g. grace notes ('Kestrel') the una corda pedal ('Serenity') compound time ('Loving Living') and unusual time signatures ('All in Good Time').

inspiring confidence to play by touch-Making sight reading easier and more effective. A progressive set of imaginative pieces to take students and teachers step by step through the technique. Don't Look at the Keys! shows students how to play by touch to feel their way around the keyboard using as signposts - the long cracks between some white notes together with the groups of two and three black notes. As music is essentially a listening experience it is almost instinctive for pianists to look down at the keyboard for visual reassurance to guide the fingers when playing. This is particularly true when playing from memory or improvising. Richard Smith 's Don't LOOK At The Keys! teaches students how to play by touch feeling their way around the keyboard using various 'signposts' whilst keeping their eyes on the music. Designed to make sight reading easier and more effective the books in this innovative series contain a progressive set of imaginative pieces to take students and teachers step by step through the technique. This is not just another sight reading book. Don't LOOK At The Keys! contains actual practice pieces as well as instructions that demonstrate how toplay Piano by touch. It instructs and develops the skill and confidence to look at the music instead of the hands and helps those students who commit pieces to memory or play by ear then wonder where to look while playing. This is the first of three books in the series. Book One is in two parts; hands separate and hands together all pieces have both hands in a five finger position each of which is illustrated at the top together with the key (all keys are on the Grades 1 & 2 sight reading syllabus). The pieces in Book Two are within an octave in both hands and Book Three beyond this range.

Lionel Handy was introduced to Albert Sammons's classic work The Secret of Technique in Violin Playing by Hugh Bean. He was fortunate to play chamber music with Hugh for many years and he maintained that his ability to keep his technical level was largely due to Sammons teaching in general and this book in particular. Hugh was a pupil of Sammons for more than twenty years and believed that this concise work was of great benefit to students and also professional players with limited practice time. The Secret Of Technique In Cello Playing . Daily practice for soloists and advanced players by Albert Sammons . Op20. Transcribed by Lionel Handy . 'I was introduced to Albert Sammons ' classic work The Secret of Technique in Violin Playing by Hugh Bean. I was fortunate to play chamber music with Bean for many years and he maintained that his ability to keep his technical level was largely due to Sammons teaching in general and this book in particular. Bean was a pupil of Sammons for more than twenty years and believed that this concise work was ofgreat benefit to students and also professional players with limited practice time. I am very grateful to Mr Richard King Sammons grandson and Mrs Mary Bean for allowing me not only to transcribe this work for Cello but also to include where appropriate the suggestions Sammons made in his original text and the additional notes that Bean added in the 2002 edition. I have tried to stay as close as possible to Sammons material but some adaptation has obviously been necessary. I hope that my own comments for cellists will clarify the changes that have been made and are offered as Hugh Bean said in his 2002 edition in the spirit of wishing to help both aspiring and established string players utilize to the full their practice time. Although this transcription contains several exercises not found in the classic Cello studies of Popper Duport and Grutzmacher et al I hope that the unorthodox nature of these exercises will broaden and free the imagination of cellists by providing a more extended approach to Cello technique.' - Lionel Handy

Grades -4-Teacher's Notes: These carefully graded pieces have been designed to help your pupils with their reading skills from elementatry to grade 3 - 4. The scale melodies will help to develop a feeling for keys and tonality. The pieces have no performance markings and you and your pupils are encouraged to add these as part of the learning experience. The chord symbols throughout are in concert pitch and offer the opportunity to add a live keyboard or guitar accompaniment. These pieces are designed to be both enjoyable performance material and a helpful teaching resource and the scale melodies will make preparation for examinations a more rewarding and musicalexperience. Student's Notes: Every piece has a full performance track and an accompaniment track on the companion CD. Listen to the performance tracks and try to copy what you hear - for example what do you notice about the quavers (eighth notes) in Pogo Stick and Swingin' - are they the same? Use your ears. Play along with the accompaniment tracks with as much style as you can and most importantly Have Fun! This book was originally published by Harlequin Music Cambridge in 2000.
