Gabriel Fauré's only string quartet which was composed in 1923-24 is the composer’s final work and was written at the suggestion of his publisher Jacques Durand. Until then Fauré had always put off writing a string quartet evidently because of Beethoven’s imposing shadow. When Fauré composed the quartet he was already extremely ill. He added dynamics and slurs only in some parts of the exposition of the first movement and then asked his former pupil Jean Roger-Ducasse to complete the work. Roger-Ducasse’s additions were however very extensive; he even altered and supplemented some of Fauré’s own markings in the exposition. Bärenreiter's first ever scholarlycritical edition of the quartet based on vol. V/3 of the edition 'Gabriel Fauré: œvres complètes' begun in August 2010 utilises all sources including the composer’s letters which provide valuable insights into the origins of the composition. In particular Fauré’s penultimate work the Piano Trio op. 120 was used to guide the editor with his emendations.

Flying the Breeze opens with three repeated B's (representing the initials of the Breeze Brass Band from Japan who commissioned this work). A short introduction leads to a robust theme from the baritones and euphoniums which is taken up by cornets and trombones. A restless bridge passage leads to a syncopated tune from the solo cornet and then to a third theme from a solo trombone. A graceful second subject leads back to a recall of the introductory material before a full-scale recapitulation. An intense allargando leads to a full-band version of the second subject under a running cornet passage which leads to a short coda.

To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan Commander and Conductor. The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer’s aim to provide a work which as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century also contained moments of reflection about the last one. After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme passing quickly through several keys appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and after ashort bridge passage an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax. An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and eventually to a full recapitulation revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe where itinerant Jewish troubadours known as ‘klezmorim’ had performed at celebrations particularly weddings since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century lyrics had been added to klezmer music due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings) to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

Easter Cantata- Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in grim death's prison) Easter Cantata In recent years the demand for making available a larger number of choral works by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) has made itself felt more strongly than ever before. Within the past few years the search for unpublished manuscripts of choral compositions written by Johann Pachelbel has been taken up again and not in vain. Approximately twenty instrumentally accompanied arias and thirty elaborate choral works intended for services of worship have recently been found. These date from the days when Pachelbel was an active church musician in Erfurt and Nuremberg and include compositionsof various categories e.g. motets cantatas magnificats and masses. The excellency of Pachelbel's choral works may be attributed in large part to the magnificence and splendour of their tonal character. They are unusually vocal choral and singable. In the very best sense of the term they are what the Germans call 'Gebrauchsmusik' that is to say they are functional music written for specific use in the church service. They are not music written for its own sake. Full score performance material (BA2875) choral score (BA2875-91) available for sale

Written in 1901 for the Paris Conservatoire contest Solo de Concours Op. 10 for Clarinet by Henri Rabaud is a piece that has become very popular since its composition. Used five additional times for the contest this piece was written for advanced clarinettists. Featuring three main parts its cadenza is one of the most difficult parts of the piece and will require some strong technique and some patience to be played smoothly. Henri Rabaud (1873-1949) is a French conductor and composer and was director at the Paris Conservatoire. He composed many famous pieces including this Solo de Concours Op. 10 butalso a cantata 'Daphné' which won the Grand Prix de Rome some operas ('Mârouf savetier du Caire Op. 14' 'L'appel de la mer') and some chamber music ('Andante et Scherzo for Flute Violin and Piano Op. 8').

from the motion picture Forest Gump-This delightful theme is inextricably bound up with the fantastic acting talent of Tom Hanks who gave a convincing performance of the figure Forrest Gump in the film of the same name. The scene of him sitting on a bench and watching a white feather fluttering down is one of the most poignant moments of the film and this has been expertly captured in this arrangement.

From the Paramount and DreamWorks Motion Picture S- Saving Private Ryan is certainly one of Steven Spielberg's most powerful films. The brilliant John Williams score creates part of this power. Hymn to the Fallen one of the most powerful and emotional melodies which appears during the closing credits evokes a feeling of hope and strength amid the overall tone of reverence. Philip Sparke has transcribed this moving work for fanfare band using John Williams original orchestral score as the source. For added effect this work can also be performed with a wordless chorus with parts being available separately.
