Method- Fundamental instructions for playing the Recorder are contained in Book I. The scope of that book however is limited to the lower tones of the instrument. Book II takes up the higher tones thus covering the Recorder's entire practical range. Shades Iv By Naresh Sohal Makes Use Of Harmonies Generated By The Open Strings Of The Viola Which Are Heard Pizzicato At The Opening Of The Work Accompanying A Bowed Melodic Line. This Passage Recurs Later After A Climax Which Sends The Player To The Highest Reaches Of The Instrument And The Work Ends With All Four Open Strings Plucked Simultaneously. Shades IV by Naresh Sohal makes use of harmonies generated by the open strings of the Viola which are heard pizzicato at the opening of the work accompanying a bowed melodic line. This is the full score of Herbert Howells' 1950 composition Hymnus Paradisi for Soprano and Tenor Soli SATB chorus and orchestra. Now available for the first time in print this score has been prepared from the known sources revised and edited with critical commentary and includes a preface by Paul Spicer and introductory notes by Sir David Willcocks. Four of the choral movements (II-V) are settings of Latin and English texts. These are drawn from the Psalms and the 'Miss pro defunctis' the book of Common Prayer and are immemorial reflections upon the transient griefs and indestructible hopes of mankind. All are appropriate to the mood and purpose ofa Requiem. Movement VI is a setting of lines from the Salisbury Diurnal used here in the translation by Dr G. H. Palmer appearing at the end of Robert Bridges' Anthology The Spirit of Man. The first performance was at the Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester on 7th September 1950 which the composer conducted. The Bach Choir gave the first London performance early in 1951 and recorded the work in 1970 with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Sir David Willcocks.

O Virgo Virginum by Gabriel Jackson for solo Tenor and SSATB unaccompanied. Following on from the publication of Jackson 's settings of the seven 'O' antiphons under the title Seven Advent Antiphons O Virgo virginum is a setting of the Latin text recognised as the eighth 'O' antiphon and performed as such in many Christian traditions. Jackson 's imaginative setting features a melismatic line for tenor soloist and aleatoric writing.

Born in Nottingham England in 1862 Edmund Severn moved to the United States at the age of four along with his family who settled in Hartford Connecticut. Severn began to study the Violin with guidance from his father who taught the instrument professionally. He later studied with Franz Milcke and Bernard Listemann concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra before moving to Berlin to study bowing technique under Emanuel Wirth the first assistant of Joseph Joachim at the Berlin Hochschule. As a composer Edmund Severn wrote mainly orchestral music as well as many pieces for the Violin including a concerto; he also wrote three stringquartets. To this day the Polish Dance for Violin and Piano has remained Severn ’s most famous work. The piece is arranged here by Alan Arnold for Viola and Piano.
